Next Meeting Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego. We'll have a guest speaker tonight: Ralph Rubio. The meeting is going to be packed, so please arrive early! Also, please think about some questions that you would like to ask Ralph, specifically around perserverance and business. Details below. We're looking forward to seeing you!

Guest Speaker Tonight – October 16: Ralph Rubio October 16 (Tuesday) 6:30 pm Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown Make sure to make this meeting as we will be joined by Ralph Rubio of Rubio's Restaurants. Ralph will share some of his wisdom in creating a publicly traded company and how he managed to persevere throughout the entire process. Ralph Rubio and his father opened the first Rubio's Home of the Fish Taco restaurant in the Mission Bay area of San Diego in 1983. Rubio's Restaurants, Inc., headquartered in Carlsbad, operates, licenses or franchises more than 150 Rubio's restaurants in California, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada and is publicly held: RUBO (Nasdaq).

October Dues It is that time of year again. Current Rotaract members, the semi-annual dues are $30. The dues go to help subsidize the many community service and social events that occur throughout the year. These events include the Rancho Jireh Picnic, the ice cream social and bingo at the senior center, as well as many more. For new members, once you have completed your membership requirements, there is a one time initiation fee of $28. This fee goes towards a snazzy Rotaract t-shirt, pin, and certificate. In addition, new members will also need to pay the $30 for semi-annual dues. The total amount for a new member is $58. You can pay your dues by attending a general meeting and giving a check or cash to the Treasurer, Steve Goodall. You can also pay with your credit card or bank account through PayPal.

Recap: Meet and Greet Barbecue This last Saturday was the "Meet and Greet" Barbecue co-hosted with the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club. Members from both Rotary and Rotaract were present at Martin Blair's awesome beach house in Carlsbad. Much food and fun were had as the clubs mingled and enjoyed the ocean view. The annual Beach Volleyball Tournament was also held that day, Rotaractors vs. Rotarians. Impressive plays and digs were made on both sides, but the Rotarians came out on top this year with a win of two out of three games. Cheers to you Rotarians, we'll be looking forward to next year to win that Chianti trophy back! A big thanks to Martin for letting us use his house this year. Tijuana Homebuilding: Saturday, October 27th October 27 (Saturday) 5:45 am - 7:00 pm Tijuana, Mexico The annual Tijuana Homebuilding event is coming upon us again and this year, the Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego is hoping to have another caravan of enthusiastic, energetic, helpful members who are willing to spend a day helping to build homes in Tijuana. We will be working side by side with the Mexico Caravan Ministries Group to build two homes for poverty-stricken families south of the border. The Mexico Caravan Ministries was founded fifteen years ago by Dave Burdette, a missionary who aimed to bring Canadian and American students and adults to help the homeless in Mexico. Groups of 10-15 people go out early in the day with their assigned guide who has expertise in building these homes. Through teamwork and collaboration, by the end of the day the group has built a solid 12'X16' shelter! The plan is to leave very early in the morning (5:45 am) on October 27th. People may park their cars at the Old Town Trolley station for the day. We will carpool in vans to meet up with the ministry guide in Chula Vista by 6:30 am. We need to make sure that we are on time as the guide will be taking us into the heart of Tijuana province. We should be back into San Diego by 7:00 pm that evening. This event will make a difference in the lives of everyone involved. The project aims to help those less fortunate and reach our hearts and hands across cultural borders. It's amazing what can be accomplished in only one day! No construction experience or tools are required. Tools are provided by the guides. Participants need only to be prepared for an incredible time – to have a lot of fun and laughter with other Rotaractors while creating a lasting legacy in Tijuana. Join in on this wonderful event and make a difference in someone's life! Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes 2007: Looking for Donations and Raffle Prizes December 01 (Saturday) 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm MINUS 1 Lounge, Keating Hotel, 432 F Street Ticket prices: $25 in advance, $35 the week of the event Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes is closer than you think! We have pinned down the following details to make this event the best this club has ever produced: Jazz for JDRF, December 1st, 2007, 6-9 PM, The MINUS 1 Lounge at the Keating Hotel, 432 F Street, Live Jazz Music Featuring the Elliott Lawrence Trio.Tickets will be sale at meetings but also through the website via PayPal. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 the week of the event. Our Beneficiary: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) JDRF is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. We need everyone's support to make this event run without a hitch. Anyone who would like to help with donations for our raffle and silent auction are encouraged to do so. Members' Bulletin Board Market Creek Plaza: A New Home-Grown San Diego Fun Spot! Arts & Culture Festival October 20 (Saturday) 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm Market Creek Plaza Come see the brand new cultural and shopping district that's created a buzz around our city. Volunteers Needed for Monarch School's Butterfly Enterprises Mondays 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm The Monarch School The Monarch School is looking for help with their business club, Butterfly Enterprises. They're looking for a couple of volunteers to help out on Mondays from about 3:00-5:00pm and occasionally on the weekends or evenings. The purpose of the club is to teach the students how to run a business. They learn how to make certain products (jewelry, embossed napkins, and stationary), and also how to market and sell their products. If you're interested in becoming a part of their team or if you'd like more information, please contact Kristin Shea. Rotaract & Rotary Trivia What is the RI Rotaract Committee? The committee recommends ways to strengthen the Rotaract program to the Rotary International (RI) Board of Directors. It also participates in the planning of the Rotaract Pre-Convention Meeting.
