Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

We're looking forward to seeing you!
Up With People: Looking for Host Families in San Diego

August 23 - 27 (Thursday - Monday)

Up With People is bringing a group of young adults to San Diego at the end of the month (August 23 - 27), and they're seeking host families for the guests. Granted, it would be ideal for the families to have a spacious home with a guest bedroom available, but really anything safe and comfortable could work (e.g. shared bedroom, couch, sleeping bag, etc).

The full responsibilities for a host family are:
1. A place to sleep
The participants are very flexible & understanding. Even a sleeping bag on the floor could work!
2. Limited transportation
3. Meals
Basically breakfasts and dinners, the best time to share a good quality time with the students!
4. An open environment to share customs and culture
5. Opportunity/access to do laundry

For 40 years, Up with People was best known for using its musical performance as a vehicle to spread messages of hope and goodwill across nations. Today, the messages are the same, but there is no longer a revenue-generating musical production involved in the program. Up with People is a global education program for young adults ages 18 to 29. This six-month program offers a combination of leadership and life skills, international travel, a multi-national group of participants, community service and impact, host family living, the performing arts, and intercultural learning. The Up with People curriculum combines the theoretical study of leadership and intercultural communication with hands-on experiential learning.

The Up with People cast of young adults from more than 20 countries travels together to three continents, and often to more than six countries. One geographical region of the program is focused on an emerging country. Participants typically stay one week in each city conducting community service, engaging in leadership training, and producing and performing an international cultural show that highlights local charities and nonprofit organizations. The proceeds from the show are given to a local charity.

For more information, please email Bridget Johnson.
