| Up With People: Looking for Host Families in San
Diego August 23 - 27 (Thursday - Monday) Up With People is bringing a group of young adults to San Diego at the end of the month (August 23 - 27), and they're seeking host families for the guests. Granted, it would be ideal for the families to have a spacious home with a guest bedroom available, but really anything safe and comfortable could work (e.g. shared bedroom, couch, sleeping bag, etc). The full responsibilities for a host family are:
For 40 years, Up with People was best known for using its musical performance as a vehicle to spread messages of hope and goodwill across nations. Today, the messages are the same, but there is no longer a revenue-generating musical production involved in the program. Up with People is a global education program for young adults ages 18 to 29. This six-month program offers a combination of leadership and life skills, international travel, a multi-national group of participants, community service and impact, host family living, the performing arts, and intercultural learning. The Up with People curriculum combines the theoretical study of leadership and intercultural communication with hands-on experiential learning. The Up with People cast of young adults from more than 20 countries travels together to three continents, and often to more than six countries. One geographical region of the program is focused on an emerging country. Participants typically stay one week in each city conducting community service, engaging in leadership training, and producing and performing an international cultural show that highlights local charities and nonprofit organizations. The proceeds from the show are given to a local charity. For more information, please email Bridget Johnson. |

| Ace of Hearts 2007: Check Hand-Over to Father
Joe At our meeting on July 17th, we presented Father Joe from Father Joe's Villages a check for $4,793.31. Congratulations to all of you for a successful Ace of Heart event which benefited another wonderful non-profit organization!
Father Joe's Villages is a homeless rehabilitation organization dedicated to addressing the immediate and ongoing needs of underprivileged children, families and individuals who, for various reasons, have found themselves without basic life necessities. From a small center handing out peanut butter sandwiches 50 years ago (long before Father Joe arrived), Father Joe's Villages have grown to a family of seven large "villages" in the Southwest. And they are still growing. What began with a meal has evolved into a model program for serving the homeless. |

| Welcome to our International Visitors We have a few exciting international visitors this month: First, the president of the Cairo Rotaract Club D2450 will be in San Diego from August 5th-19th. His name is Mohamed AbdelRahman Khattah and his club is one of the biggest and most active clubs in Egypt. Mohamed is interested in planning an international event during his stay with us; please contact Cade, if you are interested in helping organize such an event with Mohamed. We also will have two visitors from Germany beginning August 17th until September 4th. They will be here on vacation and are interested in seeing the sights of San Diego as well as going to the beach and perhaps taking in a day at the races. Cade will be trying to arrange some activites for them during their stay so please contact her with any ideas. Lastly, our Breakfast Rotarians are welcoming a Rotary Foundation Scholar to San Diego for an entire year. His name is Dr. Daniel Figueiredo and he arrived in the city last week. He will be working at Childrens Hospital during his stay. Please help our club in welcoming all of our international visitors! |
