Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

After the meeting we will be going to dinner at Fred's and then going out to a local bar to celebrate the birthday of Andrea, our Secretary. Come and join the fun!

We're looking forward to seeing you!
A Message from Our President

It is with mixed emotions that I approach tonight's meeting, the last of this Rotaract year. Reflecting upon the past twelve months brings both disbelief and joy. (How did the time go so fast? Yet, too, look at all that our club has accomplished.)

It has been my honor and pleasure to serve the Rotaract of Downtown San Diego as well as to be further involved with our Rotary District as a whole. Very much a part of that wonderful experience have been engaging new members and welcoming the continued participation of verteran members.

Thanks to all of you for making this Rotaract club the incredible entity that it is! I look foward to all that is yet to come!

Bridget Johnson
2006-2007 President
The Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego
Tonight's Guest Speaker Rescheduled

Unfortunately, due to a death in the family, Ralph Rubio will be rescheduling his visit to our club in the near future. However, please make sure to attend the meeting as we plan to recap our 'Roadmap to Leadership'.
Ace of Hearts 2007: A Success!

Last Friday night (June 15), an energized crowd filled Luna Lounge to raise money for Father Joe's Villages. Taking turns at the blackjack tables, putting on their best poker faces, and giving a try at craps and roulette, guests enjoyed the opportunity to socialize while supporting a most worthwhile cause.

We were thrilled to welcome Father Joe and his team as distinguished guests, and we look look forward to presenting them with the donation check. (Final numbers are being collected and tabulated at the time of this newsletter compliation. But, the figures look strong!)

Special thanks to: Luna Lounge for hosting, Casino Knights for their gaming services, all of the prize donors, key event organizers, and volunteers. The event could not have suceeded without you!

Convention Opens, Celebrating Rotary's Power to Realize Dreams
By Antoinette Tuscano. Rotary International News. 18 June 2007.

Salt Lake City — A year of traveling as Rotary International president has given William B. Boyd perspective on what makes projects successful. Both large-scale efforts, like eradicating polio, and smaller initiatives, like microcredit projects, start with a dream, he said at the convention's opening keynote yesterday, but it is dedication and hard work that make dreams reality.

Quoting Eleanor Roosevelt, Boyd said, "'The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.' But I think she should have gone further and said, 'and work for their dreams.'" The strength of Rotary is in its ability to unite so many individuals from different parts of the world, giving club members a creative power unmatched in other organizations.

"We talk blindly of 1.2 million Rotarians, but we're all individuals," said Boyd. "The strength of Rotary comes from each of us dreaming our own dreams, and, when you put it all together, you get the greatness and power of Rotary."

Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman Jr. welcomed more than 15,000 Rotarians from 147 countries to the biggest convention ever to be held in Salt Lake City and the first RI Convention in Utah since 1919.

Marked with international flair, the opening also featured Maori singers and dancers performing a sacred wero ceremony to honor Boyd, a New Zealander whose term as president ends this month. The group also performed a thunderous war dance of stomping feet as well as other traditional songs and dances. In addition, children marched onstage with flags from each Rotary country, and a choir of children wearing national dress from many countries sang.

Other entertainment included singer and native Utahn Donny Osmond, who jumped into the audience, dancing with attendees and signing autographs as he sang.
