Wiggin' Out Rotary Fundraiser Recap

On Saturday, April 14th, Rotaract volunteered for the Downtown Breakfast Rotary's 2007 Fundraiser. The event was held at North Park's newest and coolest salon, Disconnected, and the theme was "Wiggin' Out." The Rotarians, some of San Diego's finest business professionals, dressed the part with wigs of all styles. We saw everything from hippies to rockstars and beyond.

No surprise, our Rotaract club was happy to support and join in the fun. We helped out with registration, bartending, selling raffle tickets, and provided additional comic relief. It was an amazing and innovative event, and we were so happy to be a part of it.

Congratulations to our sponsoring Rotary club for a successful and fun event!

2007-2008 Rotaract Elections – Service Above Self

It's that time again... for Rotaract Elections! In less than two months, a new (and improved?) board will take the helm and bring our Rotaract club into its new year. Here is the chance for you to become a part of a dynamic leadership group that will no doubt become part of your San Diego family.

New board members will take office July 1, 2007 but voting is only weeks away. There will be nominations and voting for the four (4) elected positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Nominations for these positions will be presented at our meeting on May 1. Elections will take place at the following meeting, on May 15. Once these four are elected they will build the rest of their supporting board. The time between mid-May and July will allow for a better transition from the current board to the new board. We plan to mentor each new board member and provide experience and knowledge transfer for planning events and meetings in advance of taking office.

Start thinking about where you will fit in on the 2007-2008 board. If you think that you may be a great fit for any of the Board positions, please do consider this fantastic opportunity. You are welcome to approach the person who is currently in whatever Board position(s) you're interested. We appreciate your interest and excitement. If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask Bridget or any member of our current or past boards.
Calling all Members and Prospective Members...

Membership Dues Are Due!

Membership dues are due by the end of April. (Note: this will ensure that you are eligible to get the membership discount for Ace of Hearts.)

If you haven't yet paid, please go to our website at http://www.sandiegorotaract.org. At the top of the screen you should see "Membership." From that next screen, there is a spot to pay dues through Pay Pal.

It takes only a minute or two to do... and, as you know, your efforts will help us to put on even better events to help others.

Thank you for your timeliness.

Professional Development: Rotaract Roadmap to Leadership

Earlier this year, our Professional Development Chair, Jeff Haskin, presented his 'Rotaract Roadmap to Leadership'. According to the Rotaract Handbook, a Rotaract Club's leadership development activities aim not only to make members more effective leaders in their personal lives, but also to teach them how to develop and sustain strong clubs with relevant projects. Our Club's professional development activities should expand the members' understanding of the work environment and business opportunities within our community while simultaneously providing members tools and ideas to grow personally and reach all individual life goals.

In an effort to fully assist in developing a better group of leaders within our organization we have created fundamental leadership values our members can strive to achieve. The values collected in this document shall be a fluid resource with the ability to be updated and changed on a regular basis. In the near future, a PDF version of the 'Roadmap' will be made available on our website. Jeff will also be posting additional resources, 'action steps', and meeting discussion notes for members to utilize.

The leadership values will also be used to coordinate our monthly speakers. Our speakers will continue to be informative, interesting, and inspiring. If anyone has speaker suggestions for our Chair, please email Jeff as soon as possible. Review the 'Roadmap' to determine which topic any of the speakers could address. We have discussed the following topics:

1. A leader has visions.
2. A leader commits to goals to achieve the vision.
3. A leader plans and organizes.
4. A leader approaches problem solving in an open-minded and collaborative manner.
5. A leader is decisive.

Stay tuned as we continue to explore the Roadmap.

Future meeting features:
April 17 Come find out!
May 01 Topic #6 – A leader maintains integrity.
May 15 Speaker TBD to address Topic #6.
Wanted: Used Cell Phones!

Jonathan Stone from the Downtown Breakfast Rotary is participating in a cell phone recycling program. He is asking all of us to bring in our old cell phones that we don't need anymore. Jonathan is working with an agency that recycles these phones for parts or by giving newer models to people in need. Since we can't throw away old cell phones because of their batteries, this is the perfect chance to dispose of your phone and see it put to good use.

Please bring your used cell phones to our meetings on the first and third Tuesday of the month and turn them in to Jonathan Stone or Cade Fulton.

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

Bill Boyd, 2006-07 Rotary International President:

Bill's Resource Groups – Family of Rotary

Friendship was the foundation, the rock on which Rotary service was built. The Family of Rotary Resource Group will encourage clubs to care for Rotarians, their families, and members of the larger Rotary family, thereby strengthening clubs and instilling a sense of integrity, tolerance, and unselfishness in the next generation.

Over the next year, the family of Rotary resource group will provide guidance to Rotary clubs and districts, and encourage them to promote projects and activities to enhance every family of Rotary member's experience. In addition, the resource group will encourage every Rotarian to celebrate December as Family Month. By boosting membership and participation in Rotary clubs, the success of the "family of Rotary" concept will help to ensure Rotary’s continued presence as a vital instrument of service in the century ahead.

The family of Rotary:
Rotarians' family members, spouses, widows and widowers, children, grandchildren, other relatives.

The larger Rotary family:
Our neighbors in other clubs and districts around the world, Rotary Foundation alumni, Group Study Exchange members, Rotary Youth Exchange students, Rotaractors, Interactors, RYLA participants, Inner Wheel and other spouse groups, Global Networking Groups (Rotary Fellowships & Rotarian Action Groups).

Supporting family of Rotary is of critical importance because it:
• Builds lifelong friendships
• Enhances our personal families' relationships
• Builds world understanding and peace
• Improves international solidarity and tolerance
• Contributes to membership growth
• Contributes to diversity of age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, and profession
• Improves Rotary's public image
• Strengthens clubs and the commitment to service
