Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

We're looking forward to seeing you!
February: World Understanding Month

Quotes worth thinking about as we continue to celebrate World Understanding Month:

"Tolerance implies a respect for another person, not because he is wrong or even because he is right, but because he is human."
     – John Cogley Commonweal

"America is so vast that almost everything said about it is likely to be true, and the opposite is probably equally true."
     – James T. Farell

"Education is a progressive discovery of our ignorance."
     – William James "Will" Durant

"Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage."

"The capacity for hope is the most significant fact of life. It provides human beings with a sense of destination and the energy to get started."
     – Norman Cousins

How we embrace these ideas and incorporate them into our actions and beliefs will contribute to world understanding. Yes, that can go in various directions; thus, it is up to each of us to decide and declare what impact we each will have on the world.

If you have any recent events or discoveries that you feel apply to or tie in with World Understanding Month, please share them at our next meeting on February 20th.

Model UN Conference: Volunteers Needed

March 24 & 25 (Saturday & Sunday)
8:00 am - 4:00 pm and 11:00 pm - 7:00 am
Location TBA

The local Rotary Clubs are gathering volunteers for the Model UN conference that is coming up on the weekend of March 24-25. Five volunteers are needed on both days of the conference (Saturday and Sunday) from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, as well as one or two all-night chaperones from 11:00 pm - 7:00 am. Volunteers are needed for menial tasks, such as preparing and cleaning up lunch/snacks, moving luggage, etc. Overnight chaperones are necessary because the kids are high school-aged and require supervision.

As described by another Rotaractor: "(This opportunity) is beneficial to Rotaract members who volunteer for this project in various ways: 1) we will work side by side with local Rotarians; 2) we will provide a necessary service to ensure the quality of this conference; and 3) we will observe debates related to contemporary issues that play important roles in international affairs." That, of course, is significant to Rotaract's goal of raising global awareness and understanding.

To volunteer or for more information, please e-mail Jessica Ross Mann or call 650.288.8830.

Rotarian's Commitment to Afghan Children
Rotary International News, 12 February 2007

On 9 February, the U.S. news program NBC Nightly News featured the efforts of Rotarian Fary Moini as part of the show's "Making a Difference" series. The report focuses on how Moini worked with her club, the Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle (San Diego), to construct a school equipped with a science lab, library, and computer room for 2,000 children in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

To view a video of the segment or read the transcript, visit this MSNBC web site. Moini has led her club in a series of community service projects in the war-torn country. An Iranian-born U.S. citizen, Moini has traveled to the region six times, often as a Rotary Volunteer, with support from Rotary Foundation programs.
