February: World Understanding Month

Each week this month, our newsletter will highlight something related to how we can further ponder global issues and/or think outside of our national and cultural "bubbles."

"Any American who travels abroad is an ambassador for our country."
In making this statement, Karen Hughes both challenges and reminds us of our duty and privelege as an Americans traveling to another country. As Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Hughes is tasked to support peace and intercultural understanding. In line with that, her position aims to strengthen our nation's image around the world. As quoted in Parade magazine, Hughes views her job as "waging peace." In addition to travelling around the world to demonstrate a personal side to our country's peaceful objectives, she is also speaking to us. Just as important as it is for the message to be sent to other societies, we, too must recognize and actively demonstrate our committment to world peace. Living lives more fortunate than so many around the world, we must show that our care does extend beyond our personal environments.

When we have the opportunity to embrace visitors to San Diego, or when we have the opportunity to be visitors elsewhere, we are indeed ambassadors. We cannot be intimidated by this as an daunting responsibility. Rather, we must view such occasions as invaluable chances to break down barriers, disprove untruths, and contribute toward global harmony.

Valentine's Desserts and Bingo at the Senior Center

February 17 (Saturday)
1:30 pm
Senior Center, 928 Broadway, Downtown

Join us for bingo and dessert with the seniors on Saturday, February 17th at 1:30 pm. Please plan on arriving in plenty of time to find street parking. Most of the streets in the area are metered, so bring plenty of change!

The senior center provides the bingo and we will provide the sweets. Please bring your favorite dessert such as cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc. to serve about 10-15 people.

Additionally, the center is also asking for us to provide some small prizes for the winners of the bingo games. Here's a list of the items the senior center recommended:
• T-shirts
• Lotion for dry-skin
• Flashlights with batteries
• Tote bags
• Umbrellas and rain coats/ ponchos
• McDonald’s coupon gift booklets
• Lap blankets
• Small food baskets with pop-top soups, stews, hot chocolate, snack crackers, etc.
• Board games like scrabble, checkers and chess
• Small boxes of laundry soap
• Dish soap
• 1lb. cans of coffee
If you are interested in bringing a prize, too, please contact Cade.
Model UN Conference: Volunteers Needed

March 24 & 25 (Saturday & Sunday)
8:00 am - 4:00 pm and 11:00 pm - 7:00 am
Location TBA

The local Rotary Clubs are gathering volunteers for the Model UN conference that is coming up on the weekend of March 24-25. Five volunteers are needed on both days of the conference (Saturday and Sunday) from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, as well as one or two all-night chaperones from 11:00 pm - 7:00 am. Volunteers are needed for menial tasks, such as preparing and cleaning up lunch/snacks, moving luggage, etc. Overnight chaperones are necessary because the kids are high school-aged and require supervision.

As described by another Rotaractor: "(This opportunity) is beneficial to Rotaract members who volunteer for this project in various ways: 1) we will work side by side with local Rotarians; 2) we will provide a necessary service to ensure the quality of this conference; and 3) we will observe debates related to contemporary issues that play important roles in international affairs." That, of course, is significant to Rotaract's goal of raising global awareness and understanding.

To volunteer or for more information, please e-mail Jessica Ross Mann or call 650.288.8830.

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

Why does the Rotary year start on July 01?
By Antoinette Tuscano, Rotary International News

Dollars and some good financial sense are why the Rotary year starts 1 July – at least that's what the RI auditors said, according to 1912-13 RI President Glenn C. Mead's report in the September 1913 issue of The Rotarian. The auditors found that the organization's affairs had been managed "honestly and carefully." Still, RI was growing and had recently become an international organization, and its needs were changing. The secretary and treasurer needed more time to prepare, audit, and check the organization's financial statements by the end of the calendar year. The auditors recommended that the organization close its financial books for the year on 30 June, which was after the RI Convention. The Board of Directors agreed, and ever since, the Rotary year has begun on 1 July.
