Did you know February is World
Understanding Month? Consider this excerpt from the Rotary International Newsroom: "February is World Understanding Month on the Rotary calendar. It's difficult, however, to understand others if you can't comprehend the words they use. But once you learn another language, a new world opens. You can read more newspapers and understand more movies. You can learn about more people's lives and laugh at their jokes. Most important, you'll always know when someone is talking about you in an elevator. Many worldly Rotarians are polyglots. Among the Rotarians featured in the February issue of The Rotarian are a training consultant and a photographer. Both have used a second language in their careers or service work. Rotarians are also helping others learn languages. In Malmö, Sweden, they're conversing in Swedish with immigrants. In Chile, Rotarians have trained English instructors. In Haiti, they're funding French tutoring, giving students a chance at a better education and brighter career prospects. Consider how your life might be better if you added another language to it. Then imagine how our world would be better if we all knew another language." As we move through World Understanding Month, let us challenge ourselves to take a more global perspective in our daily lives. Take the opportunity to consider how what you're doing at any given moment will affect not only the world you know, but the world you don't know. What you're doing or, more importantly how you think about your actions, does make a difference. Whether it's learning another language or learning more about the subcultures within your own community, your efforts can foster open-mindedness and peace ... and that is something to celebrate! |

| Rotaract & Rotary Trivia Rotary Awareness Month ... Last week's question: 4. When was the first club outside the United States chartered? a. 1907, b. 1912, or c. 1916. Bonus question: Where was this club? The correct answers: b. 1912. This club was chartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. (The Rotarian, January 2007) World Understanding Month February was chosen as World Understanding Month because it includes the birthday of Rotary International: 23 February. During the month, Rotaract clubs are encouraged to present programs that promote international understanding and goodwill. They may invite international speakers, arrange discussions on global issues, or present entertainment with a cultural or artistic theme. Many clubs also take the opportunity to organize an international community service project or establish a Twin Club relationship with a Rotaract club in another country. World Understanding Month is a chance for every Rotaractor to reflect upon and promote Rotarys continued quest for goodwill, peace, and understanding among people of the world. |
