Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 06, 2007 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

Please note: There will be no meeting on January 30, 2007. We are only meeting on the first and third Tuesday of each month.

Joint Social and Community Service Event: Windansea Beach Clean-Up

January 27 (Saturday)
8:45 am – 11:00 am (or later, if you want to join us for lunch)
Windansea Beach, La Jolla

It's still a long way off from summer, but Surfrider and San Diego Coastal Keeper want us to head to the beach anyway on Saturday, January 27th, for a Windansea Beach Clean-Up!

At 8:45 am we'll meet at the 7-Eleven at the end of Nautilus Street next to the Shack to stock up on coffee and donuts. Then at 9:00 am, we'll head down to the beach to scour the coastline until about 11:00 am. Afterwards, we'll all head back to The Shack for some lunch and more fun!

Volunteer Opportunities with Rotary International

Once again the Rotary International Assembly is being conducted in San Diego at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel between January 28 and February 03. Incoming District Governors will begin their training on January 29. Here are two separate areas for which volunteers are needed:

Greeters for International Assembly

January 28 (Sunday)
Shifts: 7:00 am – 12:00 pm / 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm / 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Airport or Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego

District 5340 is delighted to welcome the incoming governors and greet them on Sunday, January 28. If you would like to serve as Greeter at the Airport or at the Hotel we offer you the opportunity to sign up online. There will be three 5-hour shifts. Please indicate the shift that you will be available to greet. They need about 30 greeters per shift.

International Assembly Book Donation Project

There are two opportunities within this one project during the International Assembly held in San Diego:

January 30 (Tuesday)
3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego

The spouses of District Governors Elect from around the world will bring about 1,800 books to San Diego which will be personalized by them, packed, and delivered to local charities by District 5340 Rotary clubs. Volunteers are needed to assist with: packing, taping and moving filled boxes from Randall Ballroom to Manchester Grand Hyatt loading dock to truck(s).

February 01 (Thursday)
9:30 am – 11:00 am
Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego

Volunteers will also be packing 1,250 "Newborn Literacy Kits" for local charities. Volunteers will assist with packing, taping and moving filled boxes of literacy kits from Manchester Ballroom to Manchester Grand Hyatt loading dock to truck(s). Boxes may also have to be driven to storage and unloaded there until delivery on Saturday, February 03.

  • Tomorrow: Dancing After School Fundraiser
    January 24 (Wednesday)
    7:30 pm - 1:00 am
    Crudo Restaurant, 1953 India Street, Little Italy
    Cover $10 with reservation, send an email or call 619-301-5620 / $15 at the door.
    Dancing After School (DAS) is a new non-profit organization which provides free dance classes to children in the 4th-12th grade, who attend schools in predominately low income areas and/or schools which currently have a low academic performance index. Students in the free after-school program are exposed to various cultures, develop self-esteem, have positive role models, stay-out of trouble, are learning about healthy eating and the importance of exercise.
    On Wednesday night, DAS is holding a fundraiser at Crudo in Little Italy:

    08:30 pm Open Dancing
    09:30 pm Dance Presentation – Alma Latina Kids, Salsa Inferno
