| Rotaract & Rotary Trivia Clubs Help Families of Fallen U.S. Soldiers By Lisa Baker. Rotary International News. 15 November 2006. As Michael Kerr and his wife, Jeannie Moore-Kerr, drove past Camp Pendleton in California, USA, they thought about the soldiers who were killed since the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 and the children who were now without a parent. It made the Kerrs want to help the children of fallen soldiers and give them a reason to smile again. From there, the idea for Snowball Express quickly turned into a plan. Once Kerr sent out information to select organizations, support poured in. This is the largest single effort ever to reach out to the families of soldiers who have died, according to Kerr. On 15 December, about 1,000 children and 500 guardians will "board" the Snowball Express when they fly to California for a three-day celebration. The first day's highlight is a performance of "The Glory of Christmas." On 16 December, the children will have the chance to play video games and meet athletes while visiting Oakley Inc. Afterwards, they will head to California's largest shopping complex, Irvine Spectrum Center. All families will receive a gift card for shopping, and children will be able to play on the center's rides. Finally, on 17 December, families will spend the day at Disneyland. Because sponsors, including Rotary clubs, have underwritten the major expenses, this trip is free for the families. "It is so great to see communities reaching out and making a difference," says Moore-Kerr. It's the families' struggles with death, lack of money, and emotional trauma that made the Kerrs want to create a joyous experience for them. The real work begins, however, once this holiday weekend ends. The M. Kerr Foundation is working to provide families with a scholarship fund for the children, as well as job training and placement for the widows. They also need help in communities across the country to give the families guidance and support, whether that comes from monetary donations or from volunteers who live near the families. "Most kids are just looking for someone to play catch with them," says Kerr. According to the Kerrs, this event couldn't have happened without the support of Rotary. Kerr reached out to local Rotarians, and District 5320 (California) grabbed on to the project. Kerr was so inspired by the Rotarians that he joined the Costa Mesa, California, club. Now Rotary clubs around the United States are supporting Snowball Express. Moore-Kerr acknowledges, "Rotary is an amazing network. We are thrilled the program was embraced. We cannot thank Rotary enough for making this a joyful experience for the kids."
