Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes Kick-Off Meeting

Just a reminder - the kick-off meeting for JFJD is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10 at 6:30 pm at Hennessey's Tavern, located at 708 4th Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. We have the pub room north of the main bar reserved.

Thanks to all of you who signed up at the last general meeting. If you were not there, or did not sign up, you are still welcome (encouraged, in fact) to join us at Hennessey's. If you cannot make it on Tuesday, but would still like to participate in planning this signature event, please e-mail Andy Gerber or call him at 858-248-7010.

Promoting Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes

Hey Rotaractors - want to help promote our annual Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes fundraiser?

We're looking for a few folks that would like to help man a booth at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) 2006 Walk to Cure Diabetes on Sunday, October 15th. We'll spend a couple of hours handing out flyers for Jazz, answering questions about the event and about Rotaract, and hopefully rubbing elbows with some potential corporate sponsors.

3rd Annual Life Skills Scavenger Hunt – More Volunteers Needed!

October 14 (This Saturday!!!)
10:00 am or 11:00 am (see below)
Downtown San Diego

We still need more volunteers this Saturday for the Life Skills Scavenger Hunt! This event with the It's All About the Kids Foundation is an educational program for the teens at the Toussaint Academy. The Toussaint Academy is a safe haven for teens and children who are unable to live with their families due to abuse, neglect, or other circumstances.
10:00 am We need 8 volunteers to meet at the Toussiant Academy located at 5th Avenue and Ash Street downtown. These volunteers will be college Financial Aid Reps and Job Interviewers, and then help set-up scavenger hunt locations.
11:00 am The next shift for the majority of the volunteers begins at 11:00 am and will need to meet us at 853 Fifth Avenue. These volunteers will fill occupations like Bank Tellers, Leasing Agents, Credit Card Solicitors, and Cox Cable Service reps, etc.
12:00 pm (- 4:00 pm) Scavenger Hunt
4:00 pm Party time with food and prizes provided!

Tijuana Homebuilding: Last Chance to Participate!

October 21 (Saturday)
5:45 am - 7:00 pm
Tijuana

This is your last chance to take part in Tijuana Homebuilding 2006! Come out on Saturday October 21st with other San Diego Downtown Rotaractors who will be making a difference in the lives of less fortunate by building a real live honest-to-goodness home! This is always a fun and inspirational event. Help build memories, lives and community in Tijuana, Mexico.

We depart from two destination points:
1st meeting place at 6:15 am: Old Town Trolley Station Parking Lot.
We leave at 6:15 am sharp!
2nd meeting place at 6:45 am: Mexi-Insur at 805 and E street in Chula Vista.
Take 805 get off on E street make a right and pull in the first drive way on the right. It is a gas station with a Burger King next door.
Please let Chantelle know if you would like to meet at the Mexi-Insur meeting point, otherwise, we will round up at the Old Town Trolley Station.
We need one driver for each van (2 vans).

We will let you know whether lunch is provided (sometimes the family prepares a wonderful carne asada feast!), but be prepared to bring your own lunch. And don't forget your camera to capture all the memories!

Important Information:
1) Try to wear your Rotaract T-Shirt.
2) No tank tops, sleeveless shirts, leggings. No shorts. No excessive jewelry or makeup. Contacts are not recommended because of the dust. No sandals or open toed shoes worn on worksite.
3) Bring your I.D. for the border crossing – we don't want anyone left behind!!!

Our next Social event for October will be the return of Culture & Cocktails at the San Diego Museum of Art on October 26th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. The museum website describes the event:

"Following a sold-out event in July, the fall installment of Culture & Cocktails will feature the influential art of father and son artists Matta and Gordon Matta-Clark. Explore the groundbreaking exhibition Transmission: The Art of Matta and Gordon Matta-Clark and enjoy lively DJ'd music and refreshing cocktails in the rotunda."

Looking for Pictures

We are looking for pictures from our Rancho Jireh Picnic, our Ace of Hearts fundraiser, the Senior Center, dinners after meetings, the Rotary District Governor's visit, our social event at the Del Mar horse races, and from random board meetings.

Please print them out and bring them to the October 17 meeting so they can be documented!

2nd Saturday of each month

Volunteers (2-3) are needed the 2nd Saturday of each month from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm to help serve lunch at the Senior Center Downtown.

  • Volunteers Needed for 2006 Walk to Cure Diabetes
    October 15 (Sunday)
    7:00 am
    UCSD Campus, School of Medicine lawn
    Volunteers are needed for the 2006 Walk to Cure Diabetes. Check-in starts at 7:30 am and the Walk starts at 9:00 am. We hope you can help again this year because the Walk is a great fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, but it's also a great way to inform our community about Type I diabetes, and the support services provided by JDRF. This year's Walk promises to be bigger and more fun than ever.
    200+ volunteers are needed to hold this event, so please consider volunteering at this great event. Volunteers are needed for: site set-up, check-in, food booth, parking, route monitors, general floaters, greeters, route cheerers, kid zone, clean-up…
