Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

Please join us to welcome a special guest at tonight's meeting, current Rotary District Governor, Philippe Lamoise. We're looking forward to learning more about this local leader and how Rotary has influenced his life and work. More information below.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!
Special Guest Tonight: Rotary District Governor Philippe Lamoise

September 19 (Tuesday)
6:30 pm
Kansas City BBQ, Downtown

We'll be having a special visitor at our general meeting tonight. The current Rotary District Governor, Philippe Lamoise, will join our meeting. He serves as the District Governor for San Diego and Imperial counties, with 60 clubs and 3,750 Rotarians under his leadership. He will introduce himself and explain more about his role.

Philippe Lamoise has been selected to be one of the recipients of the 40 Under 40 Awards (to be given out earlier today!) by the San Diego Metropolitan Magazine, an effort to recognize the young business and civic leaders in whose hands lies our region's fate. Congratulations!

Mr. Lamoise started his own business in 2000. His company, D2G Online, specializes in building interactive database systems and Web development. The two-time Rotarian of the Year also operates a video production company, D2G Productions, and is a certified producer and technical supervisor at the Del Mar Television Station, a public access channel. One of Lamoise's documentaries, "A Walk in the Park," aired on KPBS in 2003.

Mr. Lamoise has very often used his professional skills to serve Rotary. He signed up as a Rotary Volunteer to spend five weeks in Northern India to teach computers and video editing to monks in a Tibetan Monastery in Dharamsala. He went back to the same area of India in November 2004, again to teach computers to the local community, and to follow up on some projects that got started in 2003. Check out the links on the District 5340 website to learn more about those two trips.
Recap: Rancho Jireh Picnic

Our annual picnic with Rancho Jireh was this past Sunday at De Anza Cove on Mission Bay. With sunny skies overhead, guests traveled from near and far to enjoy a lovely afternoon out together.

All had a wonderful time with water balloon toss, three-legged races, and much more ... not to mention the delicious food, prepared by our friends of Kansas City Barbeque! Many thanks to all Rotaractors who assisted in the preparation and implementation of this year's event!

More details will be shared at tonight's meeting.... But one final note of appreciation to Cade Fulton, our Community Service Chair, who organized this year's event. Cade gracefully carried the weight of this event, and deserves major thanks for her patience and astute attention to detail. Thank you, Cade!

October 14 (Saturday)
Time & Place TBA

Please mark your calendar for this year's 3rd Annual Life Skills Scavenger Course for Saturday, October 14th. This event is put together by the It's All About the Kids Foundation as an educational program for the teens at the Toussiant Academy. The Toussaint Academy is a safe haven for children who are unable to live with their families due to abuse, neglect, or other circumstances.

As a volunteer, you will be assigned an occuptation to "act" such as a rental agent, undercover cop, cable customer service rep, etc. Then, the teens will come to you and complete whatever activity is at your station.

Tijuana Homebuilding: Come Make a Difference!

October 21 (Saturday)
5:45 am - 7:00 pm
Tijuana

The annual Tijuana Homebuilding event is coming upon us again and this year, the Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego is hoping to have another caravan of enthusiastic, energetic, helpful members who are willing to spend a day helping to build homes in Tijuana. We will be working side by side with the Mexico Caravan Ministries Group to build two homes for poverty-stricken families south of the border.

The Mexico Caravan Ministries was founded fifteen years ago by Dave Burdette, a missionary who aimed to bring Canadian and American students and adults to help the homeless in Mexico. Groups of 10-15 people go out early in the day with their assigned guide who has expertise in building these homes. Through teamwork and collaboration, by the end of the day the group has built a solid 12'X16' shelter!

We will be leaving very early in the morning (5:45 am) on October 21st. People may park their cars at the Old Town Trolley station for the day. We will carpool in vans to meet up with the ministry guide in Chula Vista by 6:30 am. We need to make sure that we are on time as the guide will be taking us into the heart of Tijuana province. We should be back into San Diego by 7:00 pm that evening.

This event will make a difference in the lives of everyone involved. The project aims to help those less fortunate and reach our hearts and hands across cultural borders. It's amazing what can be accomplished in only one day! No construction experience or tools are required. Tools are provided by the guides. Participants need only to be prepared for an incredible time – to have a lot of fun and laughter with other Rotaractors while creating a lasting legacy in Tijuana. Join in on this wonderful event and make a difference in someone's life!

We will need 25 members (must be a member by October 21) to join this free service event.

Contact Chantelle Swaby or Dean Koci to sign up, or for more details.

  • Breast Cancer Beneficiary Sought
Zip It Gear is closing in on a 500 store test for a nationwide retail chain and one of our product offering is our pink ribbon pocket socks. Zip It Gear is looking for a beneficiary who does not require any type of licensing agreement or minimum donation. (For instance, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation requires a $10,000 minimum donation per year in order to use their name.)
We want a no hassle beneficiary and preferably one that will be recognizable nationwide. The organization should be a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and at least 70% of their donated dollars should go to breast cancer research, awareness, or care.
For more information, see www.ZipItGear.com or click on this more specific link. Please contact Evan Papel with any suggestions.
