We're looking forward to seeing you there!
A Welcome Message from President Bridget Johnson

Happy New Year!

Yes, it's also 4th of July. But, welcome to the 'new year' for Rotaract. As difficult as it is for me to believe that the '05-'06 year has ended, I know that there are great things in store for the year ahead. There are many accomplishments and memories of which we may be proud. While we like to hold on to the good times, we can move forward with them as inspiration to create even more new opportunities and to achieve our goals.

Rotaract has made a significant difference in my life since I moved to San Diego. I am thrilled to have formed incredible friendships as well as experienced some amazing service acitivities. For these reasons and more, I am honored to be the incoming President of the Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego for 2006-2007. In addition, I am excited to have a strong board working with me, and I thank them for their forthcoming committment and energy. (These individuals will be announced in next week's newsletter.)

We are all likely familiar with the sayings, "Life is what you make of it," and "Life is not about what you get, but what you give." Rotaract is a unique gathering of like-hearted young professionals who wish to give of themselves, making life better for the community and for one another. Through our next fundraisers, community service events (both annual and new), semi-monthly meetings, and other activities, we will make the most out of this next year.

See you at our first meeting, Tuesday, July 18!

Sincerely,
Bridget

Bridget Johnson
President, 2006-2007

Lights, Camera, Action: USCC Rotaract Conference

July 19-23 (Wednesday - Sunday) or July 21-23 (Friday - Sunday)
UCLA

The United States, Canada, and Caribbean (USCC) contains more than 400 Rotaract Clubs, working on a variety of projects on the basic principles of Rotary's "Service Above Self." The Lights, Camera, Action USCC Rotaract Conference is an amazing opportunity for our club to meet more of our Rotaract Family from the USA, Canada and the Caribbean! Anyone that attended last year's Chicago conference can attest to the level of energy, insight and plain ol' fun that was shared... and this year's LA conference will be no different!

The conference is from July 19-23rd and as you are welcome to attend the whole conference, our club will most likely be carpooling to LA Friday (July 21) and leaving Sunday afternoon (July 23). We are looking into accomodations as to make the registration amount less and will get more information to you ASAP. Please put this date on your calendar and get ready to truly experience Rotaract!

Events include various keynote speakers, workshops, group exercises, the Getty Center Museum, dinner at a Hollywood Mansion and of course... our own Los Angeles after-parties.

To find out more informaton, view USCC 2006 and to see pictures from last years' conference in Chicago, view Chicago Rotaract Conference 2005.

If you are interested, please email Andrea Espinoza.

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

President Boyd Encourages Rotarians to Lead the Way

New RI President William B. Boyd is encouraging Rotarians to Lead the Way in the 2006-07 Rotary year, calling his choice for the RI theme "an affirmation of my belief in the power of Rotarians to change the world, one positive act at a time."

Boyd, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Pakuranga, Auckland, New Zealand, stresses sustainability in Rotary projects. "As Rotarians, we understand the truth of the old saying that when you give a person a fish, you feed him for a day; when you teach him to fish, you feed him for a lifetime," he told incoming district governors at the International Assembly in February.

Boyd has selected water as his first emphasis. "Without clean water, little else is possible. If you are thirsty, nothing else matters," he says.

Citing high childhood mortality rates caused by illness and malnutrition, Boyd has chosen health and hunger as his second emphasis. " Without food, there is no health," he says. "And without health, there is no hope."

His third emphasis, literacy, is fitting for Boyd, who used to work in his family's bookstore. He sees literacy as "the escape hatch from the cycle of poverty" and a natural complement to his emphases on water and health and hunger. "Literacy enables communities to take care of their water resources, address their own health and hunger issues, and teach the next generation," he says.

Given Rotary's need to think about the future, Boyd is also emphasizing the family of Rotary, which he says includes Rotaractors, Interactors, Rotary Youth Exchange students, Inner Wheel club members, Rotary Foundation alumni, and Rotarians' families.

"We are the ones who must Lead the Way," Boyd told 2006-07 district governors at the International Assembly.
