USD "Global Citizens" Form New Rotaract Club

The University of San Diego Rotaract Club celebrated their charter on February 15, 2006 at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice on the USD campus. USD Rotaract is sponsored by the Del Mar, La Jolla Golden Triangle, and Coronado Rotary Clubs. This club prides itself on being "Global Citizens" and already have a full board of 9 that is eager to see Rotaract flourish.

Attending this ceremony was District Governor Bob Watson, Past District Governors Larry Scott and Bill Sturgeon and Past Rotaract Liason Dick Troncone. The Rotaract Club of USD is partnering with another successful club on campus – SIBC (Student International Business Coucil) – to get off the ground and already have plans to raise money through a Golf Tournament (details below) on April 2nd. Money from this fundraiser will go towards helping USD Rotaract members do work in both Trenchtown and Kingston, Jamaica. They are planning to continue their work in leadership training through the St. Patrick's Foundation.

Congratulations, USD Rotaract!

Recap: Valentines Dessert & Game Reception for Seniors

Last Saturday, Rotaract gathered at the Potiker Family Senior Residence to bring a little post-Valentine's Day cheer to their residents, visitors and volunteers. Rotaract members and guests provided a delicious array of baked goods and beverages while supporting the seniors in several rounds of Bingo. Taking nothing about the game lightly, the seniors enjoyed the competition just as much as they reveled in fellowship with each other and us.

Throughout the afternoon and at the closing of the event, the seniors extended their thanks and appreciation for our efforts. Truthfully, it was a wonderful time for all of us. We look forward to more interactive events with Potiker and the seniors in the future.

Rotary's Annual International Assembly will be held from 16-23 February 2006, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. This gathering of all governors-elect provides training and promotes a consistent Rotary message throughout the world.

Hello America, if you look to the left you'll see the Hatfield Family. And, to the right, the McCoy Family. Hatfields vs. McCoy's.... That's right folks, it's the Family Feud.

The 2nd Annual Rotaract Family Feud, that is. We'll be getting together and forming up into five person teams (aka families) to compete for the "Best Family" award (more on that below). Felix'll be playing up his best Richard Dawson imitation (sorry, he doesn't do Louie Anderson or that schmo from that Tool Time show).

Please bring $5 to put in the pot and your favorite beverage/snack. The winning team will split the pot, with the other half going toward our TJ Homebuilding Fund.

Big thanks to Susan Friedman for getting us the rec room at her place!

If you have any questions or if you didn't receive the evite, please feel free to e-mail our social chair, Felix.

Bridging the World – Rotaract Preconvention Meeting 2006

June 08-11
Malmö, Sweden & Copenhagen, Denmark

For the first time in the history of Rotary International the annual world conference will take place in Scandinavia and will be a joint conference in Sweden and Denmark! This year Rotaract is invited to take an active part. The theme is "Bridging the World" – a bridge between countries and cultures and a bridge within the Rotary family.

It is with great pleasure we invite you to join Rotaract Preconvention on June 8th-11th and the Rotary International Convention 2006 June 11th-14th in Beautiful Malmö and Wonderful Copenhagen.

The Preconvention 2006 offers a variety of educational events including vocational workshops, inspirational speeches and company visits. The social highlights will include welcome party, an International Night, sightseeing and of course a traditional Grand Gala. Along with the educational and social events, Preconvention is an opportunity to experience fellowship with other Rotaractors, lots of interaction and of course to experience what a Rotary International Convention is all about. The setting is Scandinavia, home of Hans Christian Andersen and Astrid Lindgren – the place of fairytales! See the Little Mermaid, the many castles and perhaps meet the Royal families of Sweden and Denmark!

Don’t miss the new concept of Home hosting B&B! Rotaractors from Denmark and Sweden open up their homes for our foreign guest during the Convention days June 11th–14th. This is the chance for you to experience the Danish concept of “hygge” (having a great time) and of course experience true international Rotaract fellowship!

USCC Rotaract Conference

July 19-23, 2006
Los Angeles

Next year's USCC Rotaract Conference takes place in Los Angeles, July 19-23.

The United States, Canada, and Caribbean (USCC) contains more than 400 Rotaract Clubs, working on a variety of projects on the basic principles of Rotary's "Service Above Self." It was the dream of Rotaractors in that region to educate, develop, and strengthen the Rotaract clubs. The idea of the USCC conference began in 1993 acting as a forum for sharing ideas, concerns, and experiences. This conference today is held annually giving many Rotaract and Rotary clubs the training needed to establish solid clubs.

USCC is an annual event, bringing together Rotaractors in the United States, Canada and Carribean. Rotaractors will be introduced to great leaders, motivational speakers, and community service projects ... while playing at the beautiful local beaches, Hollywood, and mingling under and possibly with the "stars!". Expand the Rotaract network to an international level and take home a revived passion for Rotaract and Service.

For more information and to register, go to www.USCC2006.org.

Please note:
The Early Registration Discount Deadline is February 28, 2006!!! The registration costs will increase after this date.

  • Roommate Wanted
Laura is looking for a roommate to share her home that is responsible, has good credit and is fun. She will be traveling to tournaments over the next few months, so she would like someone responsible to move in. The house is located in Mission Valley, close to USD, YMCA, the Fashion Valley mall, and the bike/running paths that lead to the beach or Fiesta Island. The room has its own quaint, but full bath. The person that lived in the room previously treated it as a studio apartment with a sofa, entertainment center and still had room for a queen-sized bed. Other than the room, there is no storage space available. Parking is on the street only and finding spots close to the house is never a problem at any time of the day. There is a new washer and dryer, cable and wireless internet. Utilities are not included in the rent and they include gas/electric, water and cable. Pets are great! The room is available for viewing now and can be moved in March 1. Rent is $700.00 plus utilities.
Call Laura if you have any questions 619-309-8448.

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

How are new Rotaract clubs started?

Contact your local Rotary club and discuss your ideas with the club president or club community service or youth committees. Because Rotaract clubs rely on the continued sponsorship and support of Rotary clubs, it is important for everyone to have a firm understanding of the commitment involved. Review the RI Rotaract publications with the sponsoring Rotary club.

You also may consider contacting other Rotaract clubs and their sponsoring Rotary clubs to learn what makes them successful. Rotarians also should invite Rotaractors to attend a Rotary club meeting and/or have them make a presentation during a weekly meeting.

Once the Rotary club's board has agreed to sponsor a Rotaract club, you can forge ahead with membership recruitment, meetings, and projects. Remember, the structure of a Rotaract club mirrors that of a Rotary club, so use your sponsoring Rotary club as a resource for answering your "how do we do this?" questions. They have expertise to share.

When your Rotaract club is ready, complete the Rotaract Club Organization List form so Rotary International can officially charter your club.
