Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 07, 2006 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

We'll be having an after-meeting dinner at Hennessey's ... 2 for 1 burgers, great beer and don't forget, Karaoke starts at 9:00 pm! Details below.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!
Dinner at Hennessey's

February 07 (Tuesday)
After our general meeting.
Hennessey's, 708 4th Avenue

After-meeting Dinner at Hennessey's. We'll all be getting together to socialize, eat a little grub and put back a few beers at Hennessey's after our meeting tonight. Just stick around after the meeting and we'll all go over there together.
Choosing an Ace of Hearts Beneficiary – Members Only!

In May, the Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego will host it's 4th Annual Ace of Hearts fundraiser. Even though we have just (successfully) gotten through our last fundraiser in December, we will be in the beginning stages of planning for Ace of Hearts soon enough.

The most critical piece in the pre-planning stage is here. We need to choose our beneficiary! Members (only) of our Rotaract club are encouraged to submit a "proposal" for their non-profit beneficiary of choice and the board will be voting in our February board meeting.

Please email Andrea Espinoza with the name of the organization, the contact person(s) if known, a website and your thoughts/reasons why we as a club should donate to that particular organization. All email proposals need to be submitted by Friday, February 10th.
2nd Annual Family Feud Event

February 25 (Saturday)
Time & Location TBA

It's time to pucker up folks! Get geared up for good ole fashioned Family Feud. We'll be splitting up into teams and playing against one another to become the "top family." Everybody puts in $5 and the winning team takes half the pot (the other half goes to TJ Homebuilding). Watch for the Evite for the time and location!

March Road Trip
Also stay tuned for the March Road Trip! We'll be taking a little poll at the next meeting or two to determine where we'll go.
Recap: Whale Watching Trip

The mate was a mighty sailing man…the skipper brave and sure…
9 Rotaractors set sail that day…for a three hour tour…a three hour tour…

Whale Watching 1

The weather was anything but rough and our ship easily navigated a gentle Pacific Ocean last Saturday afternoon. Our voyage was a success when a California Gray Whale surfaced just 20 meters to the Southwest off our Port side at precisely 14:30 Pacific Time. We followed the whale on its migratory journey for about 40 minutes and watched it take 3 or 4 breaths in a couple of minutes, then wave us goodbye with its tail and dive deep for 6 to 8 minutes at a time.

Whale Watching 2

We made it back to the harbor by sunset and shared our tales of the sea over beers and fish n chips at Point Loma Seafoods. And we also saw a ton (actually, a few tons) of sea lions, too. Check out the pics!

Recap: Care Packages for Soldiers in Iraq

Beef jerky + top ramen + power bars + Rotaract = Fun

If you weren't at Danielle Esposito's house last Sunday for our care package event, you really missed a good time for a great cause. We filled up 14 boxes with all kinds of non-perishable signature snacks, magazines, sudoku books, footballs, gum, etc. We donated lots of items that just screamed home and hopefully will make a few soldiers feel a bit closer to their friends and families and 7-11 while they are far away on their deployments.

Care Packages 1

As the boxes filled up with goodies and our members and prospects continued to form an assembly line to evenly distribute the loot, the faces in the room got brighter and brighter. This was an impressive collection of items…you'd be lucky to have so much at your Super Bowl parties! We can only imagine how much joy they will bring when they are opened by men and women who have been away from their favorite things for months.

Care Packages 2

Special thanks to Danielle for lots of work and hosting the party and to Mike Esposito for cooking up some tasty burgers!

Bridging the World – Rotaract Preconvention Meeting 2006

June 08-11
Malmö, Sweden & Copenhagen, Denmark

For the first time in the history of Rotary International the annual world conference will take place in Scandinavia and will be a joint conference in Sweden and Denmark! This year Rotaract is invited to take an active part. The theme is "Bridging the World" – a bridge between countries and cultures and a bridge within the Rotary family.

It is with great pleasure we invite you to join Rotaract Preconvention on June 8th-11th and the Rotary International Convention 2006 June 11th-14th in Beautiful Malmö and Wonderful Copenhagen.

The Preconvention 2006 offers a variety of educational events including vocational workshops, inspirational speeches and company visits. The social highlights will include welcome party, an International Night, sightseeing and of course a traditional Grand Gala. Along with the educational and social events, Preconvention is an opportunity to experience fellowship with other Rotaractors, lots of interaction and of course to experience what a Rotary International Convention is all about. The setting is Scandinavia, home of Hans Christian Andersen and Astrid Lindgren – the place of fairytales! See the Little Mermaid, the many castles and perhaps meet the Royal families of Sweden and Denmark!

Don’t miss the new concept of Home hosting B&B! Rotaractors from Denmark and Sweden open up their homes for our foreign guest during the Convention days June 11th–14th. This is the chance for you to experience the Danish concept of “hygge” (having a great time) and of course experience true international Rotaract fellowship!

At www.rotaract.se/preconvention2006/ you can find more information about the social programme for Preconvention 2006, accommodation and of course register for this once in a lifetime event!

To register for the Preconvention meetings on June 9th-10th please visit www.rotary.org. Please notice that the cheapest price is with registration for the social programme before January 31st 2006 and for the Preconvention, December 31st 2005. Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

How does the classification system work?

Rotary uses a classification system to establish and maintain a vibrant cross-section or representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional interests among members and to develop a pool of resources and expertise to successfully implement service projects. This system is based on the founders' paradigm of choosing cross-representation of each business, profession, and institution within a community.

A classification describes either the principal business or the professional service of the organization that the Rotarian works for or the Rotarian's own activity within the organization. Some examples of classifications include: high schools, universities, eye surgery, banking, pharmaceutical-retailing, petroleum-distribution, and insurance agency.
