| Power of Love Foundation and Thanks to Guest
Speaker Dr. Subramanian Our guest speaker at the last general meeting was Suresh Subramanian, Ph.D., the Executive Director of the Power of Love Foundation and member of the board of the Global AIDS Alliance. He spoke about the need to be active in the struggle against AIDS and how the Power of Love is striving to increase effectiveness of prevention of the disease in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. The Power of Love Foundation is a US non-profit that was officially founded in 2002 by Suresh Subramanian, Alka Subramanian and Ellen Furnari to develop community responses to the AIDS crisis in Africa. Although his speaking time with us was short, we thank Dr. Subramanian for his powerful message. Please look through the website to learn more about the mission and what you can do to help. |

Choosing an Ace of Hearts
Beneficiary Members Only! In May, the Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego will host it's 4th Annual Ace of Hearts fundraiser. Even though we have just (successfully) gotten through our last fundraiser in December, we will be in the beginning stages of planning for Ace of Hearts soon enough. The most critical piece in the pre-planning stage is here. We need to choose our beneficiary! Members (only) of our Rotaract club are encouraged to submit a "proposal" for their non-profit beneficiary of choice and the board will be voting in our February board meeting. Please email Andrea Espinoza with the name of the organization, the contact person(s) if known, a website and your thoughts/reasons why we as a club should donate to that particular organization. All email proposals need to be submitted by Friday, February 10th. |

Whale Watching
Tour January 28 (Saturday) 1:00 pm (duration: 3 hours starting at 1:30 pm) H&M Landing, 2803 Emerson Street, Point Loma January Rotaract Social Event Ahoy mateys, We're a goin' on a Rotaract whale hunting journey. So batten down the hatches, hoist the mainsail, pull up anchors, tighten that winch, ...well, you get it! It's whale migration season and we're going on a 3-hour tour to watch them. We found a ship that leaves from the Point Loma harbor at 1:30 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2006. Try to get there 30 minutes early! It's $20 per person. We would highly recommend reserving your spot. If we can get enough people to tell us they're coming for sure, we will reserve the spots and try to get a group rate. Nonetheless, we'd recommend reserving your spot ahead of time and then cancelling if we get back to everyone that we have a better deal. For more whale watching info, click here. If you haven't received the evite, please click here or email Felix and ask him to send you one. So come aboard, we're expecting you. See you at the harbor! |

SD Deployed Marine Care Package
Event & BBQ January 29 (Sunday) 1:00 pm Danielle Esposito's house, 3512 Grim Avenue (at Myrtle), North Park, 619.358.9668 Come on out to Danielle's lovely abode (okay, lovely may be pushing it (her words!), but she does have a yard with some grass and a pretty tree) this Sunday afternoon to help us put together personalized care packages to send to Marines in Iraq for Valentine's day. And also to eat grilled stuff, veg out in Danielle's backyard and make a big old mess. We'll be providing the shipping materials and the food and maybe even some beer, but please bring something fun/practical/tasty to send and a few bucks ($10-12) to chip in for the food and shipping costs. Here's a link to a website with some good ideas about what works and what doesn't. Keep in mind that the most appreciated gifts may be things you have laying around the house - local newspapers, magazines and books (and not just Maxim and Kerouac - include Cosmo and some chick-lit for the women!), non-perishable and non-meltable snacks, disposable cameras, crystal light, razors, DVDs, mix CDs (how cool would that be if we each made a mix CD?), etc. Please email Danielle with questions or to RSVP. If possible, let her know what you're thinking of bringing so we don't have 1900 packets of ramen noodles. And please feel free to offer up your culinary skills and/or contribute offerings to Dionysus (aka the god of wine, for the non-pagan among us). See you there! |

| Rotaract & Rotary Trivia Rotary Membership Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives. Each Rotary club strives for a membership that is an up-to-date and progressive representation of its community's business, vocational, and professional interests. Through Rotary's service programs, a Rotary club can have a significant effect on the quality of life in its community. Rotary Foundation programs offer opportunities to form international partnerships that help people in need worldwide. Some 1.2 million Rotarians in 30,000 clubs in more than 160 countries make significant contributions to the quality of life at home and around the globe. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. Membership in a Rotary club requires an invitation and sponsorship by a member of the club as well as an available business or professional classification. |
