4th Annual Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes! Jazz Kick-Off a Success Raffle Prizes Needed General Information Jazz Kick-Off a Success We rallied, we happy-houred, we got jazzed! Thank you to everyone who came out on Thursday night to Hennessey's in an effort to kick-off Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes 2005! This is going to be a great event and we appreciate all of the support we have from you. Please continue to gather raffle prizes, help with the sales and promotion and invite everyone you know to this amazing event, for such a great cause! We are hitting the ground running in the planning stages of our event! We will need everyone's help to make this evening a success. Please start telling friends, family, neighbors and coworkers to mark their calendars as we will soon have online ticket sales and are aiming to max out the occupancy! Reminder: Dues are Due! For all members that have been a part of Rotaract longer than six months (assuming you newcomers have paid your initial fees)... this reminder is for you! It's dues time. $30 and you're clear. Please plan on paying Carl Tiu, our Rotaract Treasurer. The money collected in dues help pay for events throughout the Rotaract year, such as the homes we just built in Tijuana, the food and prizes for our Rancho Jireh picnic, and other volunteer events we support. Thanksgiving Rotaract Feast with the Toussaint Academy of the Arts & Sciences November 15th (Tuesday) 6:30pm Toussaint Academy of the Arts & Sciences, corner of 5th & Ash Mark you calendars and get ready to grub! Our general meeting on Tuesday, November 15th will switch up venues as we will be sharing a Thanksgiving meal with our friends at the Toussaint Academy of Arts & Sciences (previously Toussaint Teen Academy), downtown. The Toussaint Academy is a licensed group home that serves homeless youth in San Diego County ages 14 to 17. Rotaract and the TAAS have developed a special relationship over the years as we help with Life Skills Scavenger Hunt and other events throughout the year. This will be a fun filled meeting to share in the spirit of Thanksgiving with our friends. There will be a food sign up sheet at the meeting or you can email Chantelle with the item you are bringing. We will need everything from main dishes, to side dishes, to desserts and don't forget to bring your own serving utensils! Click here for more information about the TAAS.

Member of the Month: Muriel Croom Muriel Croom has been the silent strong team player in our group, and has been very active in many of our events, while bringing her husband to many of these events as well. When making her acceptance speech at our last meeting, she said that her favourite event to date has been the Tijuana homebuilding activity. Congratulations, Muriel!

Cultural Exchange Committee We are very excited to participate in a cultural exchange this year with the Rotaract Club of Kavaklidere, Turkey. We have received a very cool package from our sister club (86-minute DVD, CD with pop music, coffee, brochures about their country, etc.) and are even more excited about sharing our city with them. As part of our package, we will be filming short messages from our members to theirs. We will also be collecting items for the Culture Box, so please bring a small item that is both personal and reflective of San Diego to one of the meetings. Pahel: Friendship Beyond Borders We met Dharmendra Gangrade from the Mumbai Borivli East Rotaract Club in India at the Rotaract Convention in Chicago earlier this year. Darmendra and his fellow club members had worked on an amazing project called "Pahel: Friendship Beyond Borders" which won the RI 2004-05 Outstanding Rotaract Project Award in both the International and South Asia / Asia Pacific Region categories. In Hindi and Urdu, pahel means good beginning, which is a fitting description of the Mumbai Borivli East club's "Pahel: Friendship Beyond Borders" project. Despite tense relations between India and Pakistan — and a one-year wait for visas — seven Indian Rotaractors and one Rotarian traveled to Lahore, Pakistan, for a five-day stay as guests of the Rotaract Club of Lahore Garrison. The participants gained a better understanding of each other's culture and a desire to promote interactions between the citizens of India and Pakistan. USCC Rotaract Conference July 19-23, 2006 Los Angeles Next year’s USCC Rotaract Conference takes place in Los Angeles, July 19-23. The United States, Canada, and Caribbean (USCC) contains more than 400 Rotaract Clubs, working on a variety of projects on the basic principles of Rotary's "Service Above Self." It was the dream of Rotaractors in that region to educate, develop, and strengthen the Rotaract clubs. The idea of the USCC conference began in 1993 acting as a forum for sharing ideas, concerns, and experiences. This conference today is held annually giving many Rotaract and Rotary clubs the training needed to establish solid clubs. USCC is an annual event, bringing together Rotaractors in the United States, Canada and Carribean. Rotaractors will be introduced to great leaders, motivational speakers, and community service projects ... while playing at the beautiful local beaches, Hollywood, and mingling under and possibly with the "stars!". Members' Bulletin Board North County Rotaract Hurricane Relief Event: Drink or Treat October 25 (Tuesday) 7:00 pm Meritage Restaurant & Bar, 897 S. Coast Highway 101, Encinitas Guest bartenders from the North County San Diego Rotaract club will be pouring drinks, with all tips, donations and raffle ticket sales going to the American Red Cross to benefit the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita! No cover charge, and no "corkage" fee ... bring as many bottles of wine as you like at no charge! Be sure to arrive in Halloween attire in order to compete for the grand prize in the Costume Contest. Position includes taking tickets and ushering. You must be 18+. Rate of Pay: $7.00/hr Dress Code: khaki pants, black shoes, white button down dress shirt or polo shirt, no earrings. But not this race, this is a race for life." The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Race for the Cure is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. Rotaract & Rotary Trivia Vocational Service Month October marks Vocational Service Month, a time to honor and develop all activities that enhance ethical standards and promote better business and professional practices. Rotaractors are encouraged to strive towards building career skills that will not only benefit themselves but also their community. Successful and fulfilling careers begin with a respect for all vocations, a desire to improve ones practical experience, and an awareness of ethical behavior. Some considerations for the month include: Regard your vocation as another opportunity to serve. Promote project ideas that build character and respect for all vocations, such as an activity using the Four-Way Test. Schedule tours of Rotarians businesses. Arrange an award ceremony to recognize those who exemplify vocational excellence and high ethical standards.
