Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

We are participating in a cultural exchange with the Rotaract Club of Kavaklidere, Turkey. Please bring a small item that is both personal and reflective of San Diego to one of our October meetings. More information below.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!
Rotaract Serves the Community...

... and has a great time doing it!

There were many opportunities in the month of September to serve the community and Rotaractors really stepped up! We should be proud of our club.

With a great turnout of both Rotaract volunteers and Rancho Jireh families, the Annual Rancho Jireh Picnic on September 18th was a huge success! We had Kansas City BBQ grilling up some delicious food, games and prizes, balloon animals and much more. Rancho Jireh Foster Homes expressed much gratitude for all of your preparation and dedication to making this event fun for their families.

Rotaractors also participated in the San Diego Festival of Beer on Friday, September 23rd, where they were able to become bartenders for the night. The San Diego Festival of Beer is an event sponsored by the San Diego Professionals Against Cancer (SDPAC) that allows guests to sample beers from a large number of Microbreweries.

Meeting the President of the Rotaract Club of Dublin (North)

Andrea Espinoza met up with Amit Ve Lagapudi, the Rotaract President of Dublin North on September 16th during her trip to the United Kingdom. Amit is in his second year of Medical School at the University College of Dublin. He says that while his club is small, they are powerful!

One of the most popular events their Rotaract club is involved in is participating in the Ireland Rotaract "Table Quiz," where different Rotaract's of Ireland come together and are quizzed on anything from Geography to History.

Their club is also involved in a popular event called Shelter Shopping, where they take some of the elderly people from a neglected retirement center out shopping and then host a nice dinner for them afterwards.

Tijuana Homebuilding

October 08 (Saturday)
All day
Tijuana, México

On Saturday, October 8, Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego members will be heading South of the Border on a day-long trip to help build homes for needy families in Tijuana, México. No experience necessary. This is one of the most impactful community programs in Downtown Rotaract history. You won't want to miss it!

We are signing people up based on membership first and have just 10 spots left!! So if you are a prospect, please do everything you can to fill your membership requirements in September, so we can give you priority status and can guarantee your place on the homebuilding crew.

To learn more about this worthwhile project, please visit México Caravan Ministries' website or feel free to contact your Club's International Chair, Stacey Dindinger to join the crew!
4th Annual Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes

December 01 (Thursday)
7:30 pm- 10:30 pm
Thin (Above the Onyx Room, Gaslamp Quarter Downtown)

It's time to get jazzed! We are hitting the ground running in the planning stages of our 4th Annual Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes event! We will need everyone's help to make this evening a success.

To find out how you can help, contact Heather Richardson or Danielle Esposito. More details will be announced at the meeting!

Rotaract to Donate over $400 to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort

In an effort to contribute financially to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, our Rotaract club decided to donate all monies raised during Bitches & Brags in the month of September to the relief efforts.

Thank you, Rotaractors, for bringing your stories, your sympathy and your wallet because we raised a total of $416 which will be sent directly to the Rotary International District 6200, which is based in Louisiana.

District 6200 and 6840 are the two districts that went through the bulk of the destruction. Our District Governor Bob Watson personally knows these two Governors and is confident that they will use the money wisely and quickly to bring aid and comfort.

Hurricane Disaster Response:
Volunteers Needed at Family Assistance Center!

Volunteers are needed to help staff the Family Assistance Center that has been set up to serve Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

At the center, evacuees will be able to register with FEMA, be assigned a case worker, and get connected to any other services they may need. Volunteers will help direct people around the center and generally help out as needed. Please be prepared to be flexible and patient.

Shifts are available Monday through Friday from September 26 - October 07 for the following times: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

You must sign up for a shift in order to volunteer. Please sign up for the shift(s) through the Volunteer San Diego web site.

Volunteer Opportunities from Volunteer San Diego

Volunteer San Diego has a long list of ways you can donate your time to Hurricane relief efforts.

Several organizations need your help sorting clothes and other donations or answering phone calls related to donations and volunteering.

You can become a trained Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Volunteer here in San Diego. The City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department offers regularly scheduled training academies that prepare citizens to protect themselves, their families and their communities in the hours and days after disaster strikes. Trained CERT Volunteers can also be called up to serve in disasters such as Katrina.

The local San Diego Chapter of the American Red Cross is also offering classes to become a trained Disaster Volunteer.

Check out all the listed options on the Volunteer San Diego web site to see if there is a way you may become involved.

Cultural Exchange Committee

We are very excited to participate in a cultural exchange this year with the Rotaract Club of Kavaklidere, Turkey. We have received a very cool package from our sister club and are even more excited about sharing our city with them.

As part of our package, we will be filming short messages from our members to theirs. Make sure to see Stacey after the meeting on October 4th or 18th to film your greeting to our new friends.

We will also be collecting items for the Culture Box, so please bring a small item that is both personal and reflective of San Diego to one of the meetings in October.

If you have any ideas or San Diegan items you want to send to our fellow Rotaract club, please contact Stacey to join this committee or for additional information.
USCC Rotaract Conference

July 19-23, 2006
Los Angeles

Next year’s USCC Rotaract Conference takes place in Los Angeles, July 19-23.

The United States, Canada, and Caribbean (USCC) contains more than 400 Rotaract Clubs, working on a variety of projects on the basic principles of Rotary's "Service Above Self." It was the dream of Rotaractors in that region to educate, develop, and strengthen the Rotaract clubs. The idea of the USCC conference began in 1993 acting as a forum for sharing ideas, concerns, and experiences. This conference today is held annually giving many Rotaract and Rotary clubs the training needed to establish solid clubs.

USCC is an annual event, bringing together Rotaractors in the United States, Canada and Carribean. Rotaractors will be introduced to great leaders, motivational speakers, and community service projects ... while playing at the beautiful local beaches, Hollywood, and mingling under and possibly with the "stars!". Expand the Rotaract network to an international level and take home a revived passion for Rotaract and Service.

For more information and to register, go to www.USCC2006.org.
