Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

We are participating in a cultural exchange with the Rotaract Club of Kavaklidere, Turkey. Please bring a small item that is both personal and reflective of San Diego to one of our October meetings. More information below.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!
'Bright & Early' Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk: This Saturday!

October 01 (Saturday)
4:30 am - 7:30 am
De Anza Cove, Mission Bay

This is a great opportunity for our members and potential members to volunteer and help out the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which we support and raise money for at our Jazz event in December. JDRF holds this walk annually to raise funds and awareness for their cause.

Rotaract volunteers are scheduled to help set up Saturday morning from 4:30 am to 7:30 am at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay. They would like us to show up 15 minutes before our shift starts and to check in at the Volunteer Check-In Station.

De Anza Cove is located at the north end of Mission Bay Park at 3000 East Mission Bay Drive near the golf course.

For more information and to sign up to help, please contact Carl Tiu or Miguel Moron.

(Although this is quite early, it's a very fun event and a chance to see your fellow Rotaractors with bed head. Get up early or stay up all night – either way, see you there!)
Rotaract to Donate over $400 to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort

In an effort to contribute financially to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, our Rotaract club decided to donate all monies raised during Bitches & Brags in the month of September to the relief efforts.

Thank you, Rotaractors, for bringing your stories, your sympathy and your wallet because we raised a total of $416 which will be sent directly to the Rotary International District 6200, which is based in Louisiana.

District 6200 and 6840 are the two districts that went through the bulk of the destruction. Our District Governor Bob Watson personally knows these two Governors and is confident that they will use the money wisely and quickly to bring aid and comfort.

Hurricane Disaster Response:
Volunteers Needed at Family Assistance Center!

Volunteers are needed to help staff the Family Assistance Center that has been set up to serve Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

At the center, evacuees will be able to register with FEMA, be assigned a case worker, and get connected to any other services they may need. Volunteers will help direct people around the center and generally help out as needed. Please be prepared to be flexible and patient.

Shifts are available Monday through Friday from September 26 - October 07 for the following times: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

You must sign up for a shift in order to volunteer. Please sign up for the shift(s) through the Volunteer San Diego web site.

Volunteer Opportunities from Volunteer San Diego

Volunteer San Diego has a long list of ways you can donate your time to Hurricane relief efforts.

Several organizations need your help sorting clothes and other donations or answering phone calls related to donations and volunteering.

You can become a trained Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Volunteer here in San Diego. The City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department offers regularly scheduled training academies that prepare citizens to protect themselves, their families and their communities in the hours and days after disaster strikes. Trained CERT Volunteers can also be called up to serve in disasters such as Katrina.

The local San Diego Chapter of the American Red Cross is also offering classes to become a trained Disaster Volunteer.

Check out all the listed options on the Volunteer San Diego web site to see if there is a way you may become involved.

Guest Speaker Dr. Jean Greaves: Recap

Dr. Jean Greaves, CEO and co-founder of TalentSmart, Inc., spoke to us at our last meeting about our Emotional Intelligence and how it affects our relationships at work. She enlightened us on how levels of individuals' Emotional Intelligence vary among different job categories and different levels of management, something we should understand when faced with diverse personalities at work.

Dr. Greaves contributed a copy of The Emotional Intelligence Quickbook, which was awarded to Geoff Miller, our largest Bitches & Brags donor.

We will also be collecting items for the Culture Box, so please bring a small item that is both personal and reflective of San Diego to one of the meetings in October.
