Hurricane Katrina Donation & Volunteer Opportunities

We collected $158 during Bitches and Brags at the last meeting for the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Now, we want to raise over $300 in the upcoming meeting, so bring your stories, your sympathy and your wallet.



Hurricane Katrina Disaster Response:
Volunteers Needed at Family Assistance Center! New Dates Available!


Volunteers are needed to help staff the Family Assistance Center that has been set up to serve Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

At the center, evacuees will be able to register with FEMA, be assigned a case worker, and get connected to any other services they may need. Volunteers will help direct people around the center and generally help out as needed. Please be prepared to be flexible and patient.

Volunteer shifts are available from Monday, September 12 - Sunday, September 25 for the following times: 7:30 am - 12:00 pm and 12:00 pm - 4:30 pm.

NEW! Shifts will be available Monday through Saturday from September 26 - October 08 for the following times: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.

You must sign up for a shift in order to volunteer. Please sign up for the shift(s) through the Volunteer San Diego web site.



Volunteer Opportunities from Volunteer San Diego

Volunteer San Diego has a long list of ways you can donate your time to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Several organizations need your help sorting clothes and other donations or answering phone calls related to donations and volunteering.

You can become a trained Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Volunteer here in San Diego. The City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department offers regularly scheduled training academies that prepare citizens to protect themselves, their families and their communities in the hours and days after disaster strikes. Trained CERT Volunteers can also be called up to serve in disasters such as Katrina.

The local San Diego Chapter of the American Red Cross is also offering classes to become a trained Disaster Volunteer.

Guest Speaker Dr. Jean Greaves Tonight!

Our Professional Development speaker tonight is Dr. Jean Greaves, CEO of TalentSmart, Inc. and co-author of "The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book".

TalentSmart helps companies develop human capital by providing leadership development and emotional intelligence tests, training, and consulting. Their clients include 3M, Morgan Stanley, AT&T, BMW, and Starbucks among many many others.

Dr. Greaves holds a Ph.D. degree in organizational psychology, so look forward to gaining a lot of insight into the workplace.
Volunteering for the San Diego Festival of Beer

September 23 (Friday)
8:30 pm-Midnight
Intersection of State & A Streets, Downtown

The San Diego Festival of Beer is an event sponsored by the San Diego Professionals Against Cancer (SDPAC) that allows guests to sample beers from a large number of Microbreweries. SDPAC is a non-profit organization in the San Diego area that volunteers their time to help raise money to combat Cancer. This is your chance to help in that fight!
The Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego is partnering with them as volunteer bartenders for the night. This is a very fun event, and over 3800 people attended last year.

All volunteers must be at least 21 years old, attend a fifteen-minute orientation session (which will be given at the start of your shift), and sign a Responsibility Release Waiver. Beer Pouring volunteers will not be allowed to consume beer during their shift... but rumor has it that we'll be all heading downtown for our own fun after the event.

Movie Night at the Drive-In Theater

South Bay Drive-In Theatres

Remember the good old "Happy Days," when movies were a quarter and you watched them from the inside of your '64 Ford Fairlane? No? Well, neither do I!
That said, you can still experience the nostalgia at the South Bay Drive-In Theatres. We're gonna go down there, sit in our cars, littler them with popcorn, goobers and Cracker Jacks, and oh yeah, we'll watch a movie, on the evening of September 30th. Maybe we'll even make it a double-feature! Stay tuned and watch for the Evite.
Tijuana Homebuilding in October

On Saturday, October 8, Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego members will be heading South of the Border on a day-long trip to help build homes for needy families in Tijuana, México. No experience necessary. This is one of the most impactful community programs in Downtown Rotaract history. You won’t want to miss it!

We are signing people up based on membership first. If you are a prospect, please do everything you can to fill your membership requirements in September, so we can give you priority status and can guarantee your place on the homebuilding crew.

  • Hands on San Diego
    September 17-25
    You can help a variety of local causes in one special week: Hands on San Diego. Over 5,000 volunteers will be celebrating the 15th anniversary of this weeklong campaign to help hundreds of nonprofit groups in need around the San Diego community.
    As the campaign website says, "the projects vary from conducting drives for fire survivors to revamping a shelter for homeless children, from building, painting and decorating tables and chairs for infants with special needs to shaking it up with a milkshake and rock-n-roll party for Alzheimer's patients."

    San Diego BRIGHT Families Project: Helping San Diego's Youth Build a Positive Future
    "Teen pregnancies, violence, drugs, crime. If they only knew what you know now."
    At our meeting on September 6th, Tony Jefferson, an Outreach Specialist with the Project, spoke to us about this wonderful mentoring program that aims to avoid teen pregnancy. The program is a collaborative effort among several non-profit agencies in San Diego. Mentors spend 5 or more hours each month with their mentees, for a period of six months.

District 5890 Aids Astrodome Efforts

Whether managing logistics or delivering food to evacuees, Rotarians from District 5890 have been essential to the success of the Houston Astrodome relief efforts, according to Coast Guard Lt. Joe Leonard Jr., area commander for Houston Shelter Operations.

While media has reported on sub par Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, those working at the Astrodome have yet to receive such criticism. "I'm not hearing [negative reports] about what we're doing, and we're the largest mass-care shelter," Leonard said. Leonard credits hardworking Rotarian volunteers for accomplishments at the Astrodome. "They are doing what needs to be done in our command center. They're playing the unsung support roles," Leonard said. "Even if it's putting tape down so we don't trip on phone cords."

To ensure 24-hour coverage, Rotarians have divided into three, 20-person shifts. "The theme is failure is not an option," District Governor-elect Suzi Howe said. "We brainstorm and communicate, and we come up with answers — there isn't anything this group can't do."

Their problem-solving skills became apparent when a shortage of golf carts slowed progress in the packed Astrodome. "The Red Cross needed to get around, and there were chaplains with bad knees," Howe recalled. A Rotarian with a transportation background devised a plan that concentrated on more efficient coordination and refueling of existing vehicles.

Howe and other Rotarians are now working alongside The American Red Cross, local police, fire officials, and the Federal Emergency Management Association, lending much to the efforts. But with access to the Astrodome limited due to security concerns, Rotary's recognition by officials as a leading humanitarian relief organization was not immediate.

Trusted organization status was granted due to the assertiveness of a single Rotarian. Bill Allen traveled from Orlando, Florida, to oversee the delivery of ShelterBoxes to the Astrodome. "But the Red Cross wouldn't let me onto the premises, so I had to sneak into a parking lot and then into the command center," Allen admitted.

The ShelterBoxes Allen was trying to distribute were eventually moved to areas where there was greater need. But the time that Allen spent at the Astrodome opened the doors to more Rotarians. While waiting for all the red tape to be sorted out, Allen said, "I volunteered to help in any way I could, and pretty soon Lt. Leonard said, 'I could use three or four just like you.'" Allen told him that was one phone call away.

Allen contacted Anita Smallwood, from the Rotary Club of Gulfway-Hobby Airport, Texas, and told her to send strong, aggressive, non-complaining Rotarians. The first to arrive was Howe, who Allen described as calm, polite, and collected. "I immediately knew it was OK to go home to my family."

While the number of evacuees at the Astrodome is down to 4,600 from an initial 25,000, those in Houston must consider the long-range impact of Hurricane Katrina. "Even when people leave our center, they'll still be in the community and that will affect the school and healthcare systems," Howe said. "We are working on a plan, and it will include the assistance of Rotarians throughout the world." Looking forward, Leonard knows he can turn to Rotary clubs in an emergency. "Hopefully we won't need to," he said. "But I would."
