Stockholm Rotaract Member Visits San Diego

Marie Hagberg, of the Stockholm Saltsjon Rotaract Club, visited San Diego last week. Marie works as an environmental engineer for the Swedish Railway system and was visiting San Diego with her boyfriend, Markus, who was attending a conference.

We introduced her to baseball and nachos at the Padres game last Tuesday night and then Andrea and Geoff took her up to Carlsbad on Wednesday so she could attend an American Rotaract meeting. North County Rotaract is working on volunteering for a Meals on Wheels program and it was very interesting to hear Marie’s reaction to this cause. The economic and political systems in Sweden being different than ours, Meals on Wheels does not exist. Marie found it interesting that in comparison in Sweden, all senior community members are delivered two meals every day.

We enjoyed showing Marie our beaches, our town, and our national pastime and we felt lucky to have learned a bit more about a foreign culture through her visit and our common Rotaract experiences. Look for a Stockholm Saltsjon club photo and messages from Marie and her members in a September issue of our newsletter.

Over the top events, again and again! The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce announced their monthly "Business After Five" in June at the W Hotel and 500 people came out of the woodwork to network the night away! Lots of business cards changed hands, lots of relationships began. July was the Hawaii-themed mixer; another great success one beautiful San Diego evening; authentic Polynesian dancers, great finger food and Mai Tai cocktails.

  • Make a Friend. Make a Difference!
Y-FRIENDz is a new mentoring program with YMCA Youth and Family Services for children ages 4-15 that have one or both parents in prison. There are over 15,000 children with incarcerated parents in San Diego County! Y-FRIENDz mentors spend 1-3 hours a week with their mentee for the period of one year. Once a month all mentors and mentees are invited to a community event including activities such as picnics, concerts, plays, athletic events, community service and much more. What are the benefits of such a program? Mentoring empowers positive change in children and helps build the relationships and skills they need to become happy, healthy, and productive adults. Outcomes include a better attitude towards school, higher chance of going on to higher education and enhanced leadership skills and self-image.
How can you get involved? Become a mentor! Our goal this first year is to make 150 matches. Attend an Orientation to learn how you can be matched with a child who needs you. Help us find mentors in the community! Put us in touch with an organization, business, group, or club where we can find quality role models. Get involved in our monthly events! Let us know about a unique idea or opportunity for an event. Help us with planning or be a chaperone.
Please contact Christina Reyna with any questions or inquiries at (619) 543-9850 Ext. 135 or by email at treyna@ymca.org.

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

Rotary Quotables

"Through my contact with Rotary, I learned about the importance of community service: the Rotary motto of Service Above Self has left a deep impression and has guided me since. I would like to express my profound gratitude to the Rotary Foundation for having given me that unique opportunity and a solid foundation that eventually led me to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, a global service organization to protect those fleeing from armed conflict and persecution."
— Sadako Ogata, Japanese Prime Minister's Special Representative for Assistance to Afghanistan

"Rotary has the ability to organize campaigns to mobilize support for some of the worthiest causes that exist, and that makes Rotary a precious resource."
— Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations

"[Rotary has] proven how much can be accomplished when a group selflessly uses every ounce of the political capital it has to help the world's most disenfranchised children."
— William H. Gates Sr., Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
