Cultural Exchange with Ankara, Turkey

We are very excited to participate in a cultural exchange this year with the Rotaract Club of Kavaklidere Ankara, Turkey!!

They are currently compiling a DVD movie including their last club meeting, interviews with their members, a small city tour, and preparation of a traditional Turkish meal. Along with this movie they will be sending other stuff like small souvenirs and some other video materials introducing Turkey.

We will be forming a committee to do video footage and put together some other items to send to our fellow Rotaractors. Please contact Stacey for more info or to join the committee.
Community Service Chair Needed!

Our wonderful Community Service Chair, Ethel York, has accepted a job in Texas and will be leaving San Diego and our club this week! We are very excited for her and wish her the best of luck, even though we will miss her dearly. She has been an active member and has brought so much fun to our club. Unfortunately, with her move, leaves the Community Service Chair open!

If you are interested in joining the 2005-06 Rotaract Board as the Community Service Chair, please contact Andrea Espinoza. Join the board for a fun year as you plan and organize the monthly service projects with the help and support of the entire board! We need you!
SD Rotaract Receives Presidential Citation

The awards just keep rolling in! Downtown Rotaract has received a Presidential Citation from Rotary International President Glenn Estess for the 2004-2005 year.

Presidential Citations were awarded to deserving clubs who Celebrate Rotary in their clubs, in their vocations, in their communities, and in the world. Our club was awarded this citation based on our service in each of those areas (see below for a list of the projects that won us this recognition) and required the recommendation of our sponsoring Rotary President, Ron Erbetta, and our District Governor, Sandi Rimer.

This citation is recognition that we are making a difference on the world stage, in our community, and in each other's lives. Congrats to everyone who has Celebrated Rotary with us this year!

Have a look at the activities that contributed to earning this award and see if you can come up with something new that will earn next year's citation!

  • Make a Friend. Make a Difference!
Y-FRIENDz is a new mentoring program with YMCA Youth and Family Services for children ages 4-15 that have one or both parents in prison. There are over 15,000 children with incarcerated parents in San Diego County! Y-FRIENDz mentors spend 1-3 hours a week with their mentee for the period of one year. Once a month all mentors and mentees are invited to a community event including activities such as picnics, concerts, plays, athletic events, community service and much more. What are the benefits of such a program? Mentoring empowers positive change in children and helps build the relationships and skills they need to become happy, healthy, and productive adults. Outcomes include a better attitude towards school, higher chance of going on to higher education and enhanced leadership skills and self-image.
How can you get involved? Become a mentor! Our goal this first year is to make 150 matches. Attend an Orientation to learn how you can be matched with a child who needs you. Help us find mentors in the community! Put us in touch with an organization, business, group, or club where we can find quality role models. Get involved in our monthly events! Let us know about a unique idea or opportunity for an event. Help us with planning or be a chaperone.
Please contact Christina Reyna with any questions or inquiries at (619) 543-9850 Ext. 135 or by email at treyna@ymca.org.

  • Room/Roommate Needed by August 1 (Or Sooner)!
Being new to the area, I can't decide where I want to live. So, I've finally narrowed it down to somewhere close to everything. Easy enough? I'm looking for a place with easy access to the 8 West or 5. I'm currently in the Point Loma/OB area and enjoy being central to everything.
I'm easy going, fun yet reserved, and prefer non-smoker. Although I work a lot, I would love to have a fun roommate to hang out with and show me around the nooks of San Diego. Thanks Rotaract for being so welcoming!

Featured Rotary International Project: To Walk in Safety

Former war zones in Southeast Asia, Central Africa, and other regions, may now be at peace but for some communities landmines are still taking lives.

When District 5030 discovered the daily threats being faced by villagers in the Cambodian villages of Ta Saen and Ou Chambok due to landmines, they decided to try to help. "People were living with landmines literally in their backyards," said Sally Mackle, of the Rotary Club of Seattle, who is now active in the International Fellowship of Rotarians for Mine Action. The communities are situated along a belt filled as many as 500,000 landmines from decades-old conflicts that stretches 700-kilometers along the border with Thailand.

Fifteen clubs from the district joined forces to raise funds over a six-month period that would allow the villages to be completely demined in the course of a year. In November 2004, Rotarians visited the project sites in Cambodia to construct wells and a school.

"Now the families can go back to earning their living off of the rich soil and children can once again play in their yards," Mackle said. "The power of Rotary is that we can join together as Rotarians and put our resources and money together to demine entire villages."

To learn how to help, contact Mackle or visit the Mine Action Fellowship at www.rfma.org.
