Next Meeting

Our first general meeting of the 2005-2006 Rotaract year will be held on Tuesday, July 05, 2005 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!
Welcome Message from President Andrea Espinoza

Dear Fellow Rotaractors and Rotarians,

Thank you for the honor of representing this amazing club in the 2005-2006 term as your president. The past two and half years as a member of the Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego have truly impacted me, as I'm sure have impacted you. I have planned events and fundraisers with you, built homes with you in Tijuana, boogied with you on the dance floor and just shared memories that I will treasure forever. This doesn't even compare though, to the wonderful life-long friendships that I have made and that mean so very much to me.

Because, see, this is what Rotaract is about. It's about friendships. It's about community. It's about serving others. It's about global understanding. It's about service and it's about unity. This is why I love this club so much and am passionate about its future.

I am blessed with an awesome board that will be providing you with great community service projects, fun social events (watch out, Felix will be planning these!), impacting fundraisers and international awareness. I have big shoes to fill, following Geoff Miller as president, who led this club to where it is today. But, I am up to the challenge and am confident that this year will be a great one.

I am excited to see what we are going to accomplish, together, this year!

I hope you all had a fun and safe 4th of July. See you, with gavel in hand, on July 5th.

Sincerely,

Andrea Espinoza
President

SD Rotaract Receives Presidential Citation

The awards just keep rolling in! Downtown Rotaract has received a Presidential Citation from Rotary International President Glenn Estess for the 2004-2005 year.

Presidential Citations were awarded to deserving clubs who Celebrate Rotary in their clubs, in their vocations, in their communities, and in the world. Our club was awarded this citation based on our service in each of those areas (see below for a list of the projects that won us this recognition) and required the recommendation of our sponsoring Rotary President, Ron Erbetta, and our District Governor, Sandi Rimer.

This citation is recognition that we are making a difference on the world stage, in our community, and in each other's lives. Congrats to everyone who has Celebrated Rotary with us this year!

Have a look at the activities that contributed to earning this award and see if you can come up with something new that will earn next year's citation!

Presidential Citation Recognized Activities:

1. Celebrate Rotary in your Club Member of the Month program
2. Celebrate Rotary in your Vocation Professional Development Speaker Series
and member roundtables
3. Celebrate Rotary in your Community Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes
Rancho Jireh Picnic
4. Celebrate Rotary in our World TJ Homebuilding
Community Service Chair Needed!

Our wonderful Community Service Chair, Ethel York, has accepted a job in Texas and will be leaving San Diego and our club this week! We are very excited for her and wish her the best of luck, even though we will miss her dearly. She has been an active member and has brought so much fun to our club. Unfortunately, with her move, leaves the Community Service Chair open!

If you are interested in joining the 2005-06 Rotaract Board as the Community Service Chair, please contact Andrea Espinoza. Join the board for a fun year as you plan and organize the monthly service projects with the help and support of the entire board! We need you!

  • Room/Roommate Needed by August 1 (Or Sooner)!
Being new to the area, I can't decide where I want to live. So, I've finally narrowed it down to somewhere close to everything. Easy enough? I'm looking for a place with easy access to the 8 West or 5. I'm currently in the Point Loma/OB area and enjoy being central to everything.
I'm easy going, fun yet reserved, and prefer non-smoker. Although I work a lot, I would love to have a fun roommate to hang out with and show me around the nooks of San Diego. Thanks Rotaract for being so welcoming!
Contact Andrea Seay at 254-319-0215 or seay003@yahoo.com.

  • Play Ball for Paul!
    July 30 (Saturday) & July 31 (Sunday)
    Hourglass Fields, Mira Mesa
The Paul Jacobson Spinal Cord Foundation aims to ease the incredibly difficult transition from the hospital through rehab to home for newly injured spinal cord patients. Participate in the softball tournament 7/30 & 7/31 at Hourglass Fields in Mira Mesa. If would like sign up a team, become a sponsor, or volunteer, please contact Ethel York.

  • Make a Friend. Make a Difference!
Y-FRIENDz is a new mentoring program with YMCA Youth and Family Services for children ages 4-15 that have one or both parents in prison. There are over 15,000 children with incarcerated parents in San Diego County! Y-FRIENDz mentors spend 1-3 hours a week with their mentee for the period of one year. Once a month all mentors and mentees are invited to a community event including activities such as picnics, concerts, plays, athletic events, community service and much more. What are the benefits of such a program? Mentoring empowers positive change in children and helps build the relationships and skills they need to become happy, healthy, and productive adults. Outcomes include a better attitude towards school, higher chance of going on to higher education and enhanced leadership skills and self-image.
How can you get involved? Become a mentor! Our goal this first year is to make 150 matches. Attend an Orientation to learn how you can be matched with a child who needs you. Help us find mentors in the community! Put us in touch with an organization, business, group, or club where we can find quality role models. Get involved in our monthly events! Let us know about a unique idea or opportunity for an event. Help us with planning or be a chaperone.
Please contact Christina Reyna with any questions or inquiries at (619) 543-9850 Ext. 135 or by email at treyna@ymca.org.

Featured Rotary International Project: Turning On the Tap

Clean water is the most basic component of good health. But in many parts of the world, thousands of children die each day because a reliable supply of potable water is unavailable. It is with this in mind that Living Waters for the World seeks to give its partners the tools they need to have a constant supply of clean drinking water. Acting as a resource for both secular and religious organizations, Living Waters offers a five-day course that prepares individuals for leadership roles in implementing successful purification systems throughout the world. Already, U.S. Rotarians from California, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas have helped install purification systems in Belize, Brazil, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Mexico.
