Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

This year's Ace of Hearts was a great success. We will be having the check presentation with representatives from San Diego Hospice and Palliative Care at our meeting tonight.

Please note: This will be Geoff Miller's final meeting as President and he will be presenting awards and making farewell remarks.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!
SD Hospice Check Presentation Tonight!

June 21 (Tuesday)
6:30 pm
Kansas City BBQ

The final tally is in! We raised $3000 for San Diego Hospice and Palliative Care at Ace of Hearts!! This total alone would make for our highest fundraising total ever.

But wait…there’s more!! Rotary is matching our donation dollar for dollar for $2000 and 10% of our total beyond that. So we will be presenting SD Hospice with a check for $3000 and Rotary will be matching with a check for $2100.00! The total donated will be $5100.00, a new standard that we can aim for at Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes next Fall.

There are many reasons to attend the June 21 meeting and a big one is to be there to help us close the book on our hard work from Ace of Hearts.
News from the Rotary International Centennial Convention in Chicago

Geoff, Andrea, Evan, Bridget, Carl, and Kerrith represented the Downtown Rotaract in Chicago this weekend at the Centennial Convention. We made a big splash on the international scene! As Rotary members from 161 countries descended upon Chicago, we met Rotaractors from every continent and traded ideas and opinions at a number of workshops aimed at increasing member retention, utilizing professional development programs, and creating greater synergy between clubs and districts.

Here are some of the highlights:

- Andrea and Evan stole the show on a panel discussion of regional service project winners from around the world. In describing our planning and implementation processes to carry out Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes, they demonstrated the professionalism, leadership, and commitment our club regularly puts into every project we do. People were talking about their discussion for the entire weekend and every person we introduced ourselves to showed reverence when we said we were from San Diego.

- Geoff accepted the Best Service Project award for USA, Canada, and the Caribbean on behalf of the club and appeared with regional winners from clubs in India, Brazil, Turkey, Hong Kong, and Nigeria.

- Mel Gallegos and Jonathan Stone represented our Breakfast Rotary in attending the Rotaract convention with us. Thanks to both for appearing with us.

- Outgoing Breakfast Rotary President, Ron Erbetta, and President-Elect Maureen Eberle, helped us celebrate by gettin' their grooves on Saturday night on Rush St! Check the Scrapbook pages in the next few weeks for photo proof of this!!

- There was great interest in our weekly newsletter and we will surely be increasing our subscriber totals and adding links to other Rotaract web sites from all over the world as we stay in touch with our new friends.

- Rotary International Convention for 2005-2006 is June 11-14, 2006 in Malmo, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark (a bridge connects the two cities and countries).

Bonfire at the Bay

June 25 (Saturday)
6:30 pm
Mission Bay, Perez Cove Way

Join us this Saturday for what's sure to be one of Rotaract’s best social events of the year!

Nothing says San Diego quite like a beach bonfire, so come experience this blazing party at the bay. Just bring your favorite beverage and anything else you need to make the evening comfortable and memorable – beach chairs, blanket, camera, guitar, snacks, friends.

We need wood, so if you know where we can get some, please contact Rose!

Also, if tradition holds, we will all be heading over to The Beachcomber, Longboards, The Wavehouse, or some other nearby establishment afterwards. Don't miss out.

Directions from I-5: Take Sea World Drive to the Ingraham/West Mission Bay Drive exit. Continue on Ingraham St 0.3 mi and turn left at Perez Cove Way. You should now be facing a boat store (Sundance Marine). Immediately hang a right onto Dana Landing Road and take it into the parking lot. We will be at one of the fire pits by the San Diego Bay inlet.

Directions from PB: Get onto Ingraham (heading towards OB), taking a right on Perez Cove Way (the last right before you get to the OB exit) and another right onto Dana Landing Road.

Remember...no glass containers and...uh...technically the consumption of alcohol is not permitted on San Diego beaches past 8 pm, so please plan accordingly.

World Leaders, Estess Welcome the RI Convention Crowd

By Joseph Derr, Rotary International
20 June 2005

Chicago — In a festive and poignant opening plenary session, Rotary President Glenn Estess Sr. and world leaders welcomed thousands of Rotarians to the centennial convention with a call to Celebrate Rotary.
The program began against a panoramic backdrop of five gigantic video screens projecting stunning images and videos from Rotary's past and present. Dancers and singers soon swooped into the area with a rendition of the popular song "Celebration" bringing the crowd to its feet.
"The great wheel of Rotary has turned through a hundred years and brought us back to where it all began," said Master of Ceremonies Roger Climpson of the Rotary Club of Lane Cove, Australia.
