| Take the Lead! Get Involved! Be Part of the Biggest Three Months in Downtown Rotaract History!! In the next three months, we have more social and community service events than ever before and each offers opportunities for excitement, fun, impact, and personal growth. Our 3rd Annual Ace of Hearts event promises to be our biggest fundraiser ever. We will be launching a sister club in North San Diego County and helping our friends and fellow Rotaractors, the Lost Boys of Sudan in their first fundraising campaign. And we will be at the center of a district project (in conjunction with the Lost Boys, UCSD, and SDSU Rotaracts) that will provide clothing, shoes, and school supplies to 30 orphaned children in Tijuana. We would like to have 3-4 non-board members form committees on each major project to ensure that we’ll have enough strong, capable people working together to produce unforgettable events. | 3rd Annual Ace of Hearts General Information San Diego Hospice Representatives to Attend April 5th Meeting PR Committee Annual Sponsorship General Information May 12, 2005 (Thursday) 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm Sidebar $25 Rotaract/Rotary Member $30 Rotaract Prospects/General Public The Third Annual Ace of Hearts benefit will be at Sidebar on May 12, 2005 from 7pm – 10pm. Tickets are $30 for the general public (and Rotaract prospective members) and $25 for Rotary and Rotaract members. A great Monte Carlo night featuring a fun night of casino style gabling with craps, blackjack, roulette and more. This years beneficiary is San Diego Hospice. San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care is a not-for-profit, independent health care organization providing expert pain management and compassionate care to adults, children and infants living with serious or life-limiting illness. Their amazing mission is to prevent and relieve suffering and promote quality of life, at every stage of life, through patient and family care, education, research and advocacy. San Diego Hospice Representatives to Attend April 5th Meeting Rotaract is fortunate to have representatives from the San Diego Hospice's administration join us on the April 5th General Meeting to talk and inform the group on what SD Hospice is all about. Don't miss this great opportunity to meet and mix with this years' Ace of Hears beneficiary! Attending from SD Hospice will be: Danielle Hoffman (Manager of Marketing & Community Relations), Julie Tweeten (Annual Fund Director), and Jennifer Wagner (Development Assistant). PR Committee Anyone interested in providing support to the PR committee for the upcoming Ace of Hearts event, please contact Jomi. Responsibilities include District Rotary Meeting visits, passing out flyers in the downtown area in groups, contacting local media. | New Opportunity in Unchartered Territory! Our club needs your help to pioneer efforts in creating a Rotaract Fundraising Archive! This archive will provide support to future club leadership by making processes more turn key, allowing for time to make our future events that much more of a success. The club needs a volunteer to gather all materials related to the upcoming Ace of Hearts event from each committee head to create a master event reference file. You won't be alone! | Lost Boys Rotaract Liaison Position to Be
Appointed We are planning to assist the Lost Boys in their first ever Fundraising Dinner, April 16 at the Handlery Hotel. As part of our plan to assist, Geoff would like to appoint a Lost Boys Rotaract Liaison who would report to our club on ways that we can help their club get established. Downtown Rotaract members are needed to attend planning meetings for the fundraiser, to provide mentoring for Lost Boys officers so they can learn to run their own events, and to attend general Lost Boys/Mid City Rotaract meetings as well. We would like to have 2-3 of our members attend each meeting and the liaison could provide organization and leadership for our combined efforts. If you are interested in representing our club at the Lost Boys/Mid City Rotaract meetings, please email Geoff. Lost Boys Rotaract meetings are 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) office at 4535 30th Street, Suite 115. The next meeting will take place on Saturday, March 5. Please e-mail Breanne Thornton at IRC or Duom Deng to RSVP. The Lost Boys of Sudan Since 1983, nearly five million people have been displaced by the civil war in Sudan. Among these are at least 20,000 children, mostly boys, between 7 and 17 years of age who were separated from their families. They trekked enormous distances over a vast unforgiving wilderness, seeking refuge from the fighting. Thousands died along the way – they drowned, were eaten by wild animals, shot by military forces or overcome by hunger, dehydration or fatigue. Thousands of others survived to tell the story. They became known to the world as the "Lost Boys of Sudan." After 14 years in refugee camps, their plight came to the attention of the U.S. State Department and beginning in 2001, thousands of these courageous young men were resettled in the United States. | Election Time Sooner This Year! The board has decided to move elections up from May to April this year (we hope that this will become a permanent change). New board members will still take office July 1, at the beginning of the new fiscal year, but the additional time as "officers-elect" will allow for a better transition from the current board to the new board. We plan to mentor each new board member, allow the new board to attend board meetings, and provide experience and knowledge transfer for planning events and meetings in advance of taking office. This is another step in the growth of the club and we believe that this extra training period will produce an even stronger 2005-2006 Rotaract year! Mark your calendars now as we need every member to participate in the nomination and voting processes.

| New Web Page Keeps Track of Former SD Rotaract
Members We will be creating a new section on the web site that displays a virtual "where are they now" to any San Diego Rotaract members who no longer live in San Diego. We'll mark US and World maps with symbols in the cities where members are currently living and an email address for anyone who wants to participate. Our goal is to show that not only does Rotaract span the globe, so does the San Diego Rotaract! And we hope that this will help our "expat" members stay connected to us as well as let us know where we can find friends when we travel. If you have been a Downtown Rotaract member in the past and you are living in another city, please email Dave and ask him to place your city and email address on the map. And if you happen to know someone who we might be missing, please pass this idea along to them and ask them to reconnect with the club. |

& Rotary Trivia 2003-04 Outstanding Rotaract Project Winner – USA/Canada/Caribbean 2003-04 Outstanding Rotaract Project Winner Recognizing a growing need for basic medical supplies in Zimbabwe, the Rotaract Club of Chicago, District 6450, Illinois, USA, initiated a project to help supplies reach hospitals in the city of Bulawayo and surrounding clinics. Additional assistance for the project will come from the Rotary Club of Bulawayo, which will receive and distribute the supplies to the needed areas. The Interact Club of Lincoln Park High School, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chicago and the Rotary Club of Chicago Financial District, also contributed financially to the costs of the project. The Rotaractors estimate about 100,000 patients will benefit from the project. |
