Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held today, Tuesday, March 01, 2005 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!
We need your help!! A Message From the President.

Dear Rotaract members and friends,

We are approaching a critical time in the history of the Downtown Rotaract and we need your help. In the next three months, we have more social and community service events than ever before and each offers opportunities for excitement, fun, impact, and personal growth. I believe that our 3rd Annual Ace of Hearts event will be our biggest fundraiser ever. We plan to fill the Sidebar with Rotarians and guests and we have ambitious goals for sponsorship. We will be launching a sister club in North San Diego County and helping our friends and fellow Rotaractors, the Lost Boys of Sudan in their first fundraising campaign. And we will be at the center of a district project (in conjunction with the Lost Boys, UCSD, and SDSU Rotaracts) that will provide clothing, shoes, and school supplies to 30 orphaned children in Tijuana. And if that’s not enough, we have a ski trip, and Easter Egg hunt at the Center for Children, and a few more surprises up our sleeves, too!!

The talent and time of this amazingly dedicated board will only take us so far. We are growing, both personally and professionally, at a rapid rate and working long hours to manage our responsibilities. Our commitment to you is as strong as ever, but our capabilities are being stretched. We need the energy, brilliance, and effort of each and every member and prospect to get us through this crucial time. I encourage you to take a close look at this week’s newsletter and think about which projects you are most passionate about and then…to get involved on a leadership level! We would like to have 3-4 non-board members form committees on each major project to ensure that we’ll have enough strong, capable people working together to produce the heartfelt, inspirational experiences that everyone is coming to expect from Downtown Rotaract events. This club has been built by wonderful people with spirit and determination. Please share your strengths with us now and join us in continuing that progress and tradition.

Sincerely,

Geoff Miller
President
Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego

Centennial Project Honors Rotary's 100th Birthday

The Centennial Project was filled with enough love and care to last another 100 years. More than a dozen Rotaract members and prospects pitched in to serve the first ever Barbeque lunch at the Potiker Senior Community Center last Saturday.

Over 100 residents attended the luncheon and each was treated to Felix Tinkov’s famous bbq on the brand new grill in the courtyard, which was donated by the Downtown Rotaract. There were fabulous raffle prizes, smiles on every face, and everyone in attendance was treated like they were our own grandparents for an afternoon. Miguel Moron assisted Felix with grill construction and cooking. Hayley McCraney and Lauren Pareti dreamed up fancy cookie centerpieces with flower garnishes.

Please check the scrapbook in the coming weeks to find photos from the day. A big thank you to everyone who volunteered their time on Saturday and also to everyone who donated cash for the purchase of the grill.
North County Rotaract Planning Meeting Tonight

March 1 (Tuesday)
KC BBQ

Dick Troncone, our incumbent District Liaison, Bess Wakeman, Asst. District Liaison, and Howard Kummerman, incoming Liaison, will be in attendance at our March 1 meeting and afterwards they will conduct a planning session for the proposed North County Rotaract.

We have already had a number of our members who make the commute from North County express interest in founding this club and serving board positions. Our plan is to treat North County Rotaract as a sister club and to make it possible for anyone in the Downtown Rotaract club to attend both club’s meetings.

If you are interested in finding out about Rotaract’s expansion into North County, please RSVP to Geoff before March 1.
Last Chance Today: Big Bear Weekend Getaway

March 11 (Friday, 6:00 pm) - March 13 (Sunday, 1:00 pm)
Big Bear / Snow Summit Mountain

With our recent weather, it's the perfect time to head up to Big Bear and enjoy the fresh, white snow!

You're invited to take part in a Rotaract Weekend Getaway to Big Bear / Snow Summit Mountain. After a day of fun in the snow, relax in the year-round outdoor spa and then enjoy an evening at Big Bear's hottest night spot, Chad's Bar. Even if you don't ski or snowboard, it's a group getaway you'll enjoy.

The Plan:

3/11: Friday evening…arrive in Big Bear and check into Northwoods Resort
3/12: Saturday…rise and shine for a day on the slopes, return to Northwoods Resort and prepare for an evening out
3/13: Sunday…head back to San Diego with the sun-kissed glow of having been out in the snow

Yup..all this fun and for a good cause too.

Depending on group size, we may be able to charter a bus. Worst case, we’ll carpool. When making your reservation, please indicate if you are able to take carpool passengers.
"ARTS Fore! Children" Golf Tournament

March 5 (Saturday)

On March 5th, the Downtown Rotaract will be volunteering at the first annual "ARTS Fore! Children" Golf Tournament at the child-friendly Presidio Hills Golf Course in Old Town, located in San Diego, CA. It’s a golf tournament with a twist – the children ARTS serve & care for will be the competing golfers!

ARTS is a San Diego-based non-profit organization dedicated to bringing hope, healing, and self confidence to the lives of children and youth facing adversities by providing expressive opportunities through the visual and performing arts. The Downtown Rotaract will be volunteering with chaperoning the kids as they compete.

For more info please contact Carl Tiu at 201-841-5042 or at ctiu2@yahoo.com.
Lost Boys Rotaract Liaison Position to Be Appointed

We are planning to assist the Lost Boys in their first ever Fundraising Dinner, April 16 at the Handlery Hotel. As part of our plan to assist, Geoff would like to appoint a Lost Boys Rotaract Liaison who would report to our club on ways that we can help their club get established.

Downtown Rotaract members are needed to attend planning meetings for the fundraiser, to provide mentoring for Lost Boys officers so they can learn to run their own events, and to attend general Lost Boys/Mid City Rotaract meetings as well. We would like to have 2-3 of our members attend each meeting and the liaison could provide organization and leadership for our combined efforts.

If you are interested in representing our club at the Lost Boys/Mid City Rotaract meetings, please email Geoff.

Lost Boys Rotaract meetings are 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) office at 4535 30th Street, Suite 115. The next meeting will take place on Saturday, March 5. Please e-mail Breanne Thornton at IRC or Duom Deng to RSVP.

The Lost Boys of Sudan

Since 1983, nearly five million people have been displaced by the civil war in Sudan. Among these are at least 20,000 children, mostly boys, between 7 and 17 years of age who were separated from their families. They trekked enormous distances over a vast unforgiving wilderness, seeking refuge from the fighting. Thousands died along the way – they drowned, were eaten by wild animals, shot by military forces or overcome by hunger, dehydration or fatigue. Thousands of others survived to tell the story. They became known to the world as the "Lost Boys of Sudan."
After 14 years in refugee camps, their plight came to the attention of the U.S. State Department and beginning in 2001, thousands of these courageous young men were resettled in the United States.

Election Time Sooner This Year!

The board has decided to move elections up from May to April this year (we hope that this will become a permanent change). New board members will still take office July 1, at the beginning of the new fiscal year, but the additional time as "officers-elect" will allow for a better transition from the current board to the new board. We plan to mentor each new board member, allow the new board to attend board meetings, and provide experience and knowledge transfer for planning events and meetings in advance of taking office. This is another step in the growth of the club and we believe that this extra training period will produce an even stronger 2005-2006 Rotaract year!

Mark your calendars now as we need every member to participate in the nomination and voting processes.

Important Dates:
April 05 Nominations for President, VP, Treasurer, & Secretary

New Web Page Keeps Track of Former SD Rotaract Members

We will be creating a new section on the web site that displays a virtual "where are they now" to any San Diego Rotaract members who no longer live in San Diego. We'll mark US and World maps with symbols in the cities where members are currently living and an email address for anyone who wants to participate. Our goal is to show that not only does Rotaract span the globe, so does the San Diego Rotaract! And we hope that this will help our "expat" members stay connected to us as well as let us know where we can find friends when we travel.

If you have been a Downtown Rotaract member in the past and you are living in another city, please email Dave and ask him to place your city and email address on the map. And if you happen to know someone who we might be missing, please pass this idea along to them and ask them to reconnect with the club.

An annual sponsorship for Ace of Hearts and Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes is currently being sought. A single sponsorship at the $5,000 level is available.

If you would like to review the sponsorship opportunity information or would like to forward a lead, please email Evan Papel, Fundraising Chair.

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

2003-04 Outstanding Rotaract Project Winner – Latin America

The Rotaract Club of El Progreso, District 4250, Honduras, developed a project to establish a physical therapy rehabilitation unit next to the El Progreso Hospital. Rotaractors embarked on the venture to help local low-income post-surgery patients receive convenient outpatient treatment. The Rotaract club was able to establish a comprehensive rehabilitation unit staffed by two functional therapy technicians. The rehabilitation unit is helping to improve the quality of life and health of the physically handicapped in the El Progreso area.
