  • Hotel Del 100th Anniversary Christmas Tree Lighting!
The Hotel del Coronado's "Lighting of the Del" will be held 4pm - 5:30pm this Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at a special 100th anniversary celebration. The ceremony will be held at the hotel, 1500 Orange Avenue, Coronado. Those interested in attending should contact Kerrith Gray for more details.
History of the Hotel Del tree: "The hotel's outdoor, living Christmas tree first was lighted in 1904, using large, colored globes illuminated with electricity generated at the hotel. At the time, the hotel was one of the largest U.S. buildings to have electricity. Hotel officials say the hotel's tree pre-dates other elecric-lighted trees, including the national Christmas tree in Washington D.C., which first was lighted in 1923, and New York's Rockefeller Center tree, which originally was lighted in 1933. The historic hotel's tree has been lighted every year since 1904, except during World War II and the energy crisis of the 1970's."
