A Message From the President

As the Holidays approach and the year winds down, I thought this would be a good time to thank everyone for making 2004 such an amazing year for Rotaract. And this being a festive time filled with travel plans to see family and friends, I wanted to provide an "at a glance" look at the landmark events that remain on our Rotaract calendar so nobody will be left out.

If you haven’t been to a meeting or a social or community service event lately, you’ve missed something big! We’ve had an infusion of energetic new members and prospects and there is a buzz that is growing from meeting to meeting, event to event. Nobody wants to miss a Rotaract function for fear of missing an unforgettable experience. This incredibly talented board continues to impress me with their heart and their ambition and they are preparing a flurry of opportunities for each of you to share in "the next unforgettable experience".

The club is transforming into a great big family. And who could think of a better way to spend the Holidays, than with their families? So I hope you’ll be a part of our Rotaract Family at as many of these events as possible in the coming month.

Humbly and with plenty to be thankful for this year,

Geoff Miller

Centennial Project Has Been Chosen

The board has made a decision to partner with the Downtown Breakfast Rotary for our Centennial Community Service project. Every Rotary club has chosen a special project that will be completed in honor of Rotary’s 100th year and we wanted to do the same. Our decision to assist our sponsoring Rotary in restoring and improving the Potiker Family Senior Residence will be the next step in bringing our clubs closer together and we will be providing the critical manpower that Rotary needs in order to complete their project.

Carl Tiu has met with Carol Jensen, who is heading the Centennial Project for Rotary, and Ron Erbetta, our Rotary President, as well as a director of the Senior Center and will be reporting on the scope and first activity days for the project at Tuesday’s meeting.

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

Rotaract History - Part 5

By 1981, Rotaract was so popular that Rotaractors in South Africa decided to host the first INTEROTA conference, an international meeting for all Rotaractors. Subsequent conferences have been held every three years. To date, INTEROTA conferences have been hosted by Rotaractors in Australia, Brazil, England, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey. International meetings for Rotaractors are also held every year at the Rotaract Preconvention Meeting that precedes Rotary's annual convention. The first such meeting was held in Seoul, Korea, in 1989, with more than 450 Rotaractors in attendance.

Several developments in the early 1990s helped strengthen the Rotaract movement. In February 1991, the first Rotaract club in Eastern Europe was chartered in Budapest, Hungary, with the help of Austrian Rotaractors. Ties with Eastern Europe were further strengthened when the same Austrian Rotaractors helped charter the Rotaract Club of Prague in what was then Czechoslovakia later in 1991.

In March 1992, the RI Board established World Rotaract Week, which is celebrated annually during the week of 13 March to commemorate the chartering of the first Rotaract club. During World Rotaract Week, Rotaractors attend meetings with their sponsoring Rotary clubs, undertake joint service projects, and speak with clubs that do not sponsor Rotaract clubs about the benefits of the program.
