Today's Meeting Time Changed for Presidential Election!!

November 02
7:00 pm

The meeting on November 2 will begin at 7:00 pm instead of 6:30 pm. This time change is being made in an effort to allow members more time to vote if they are unable to do so before work or during the day. We will do our best to make this an abbreviated meeting and will then turn on the election coverage on the big screen TV.
If you’ve already voted and you can stick around, please join us for this historic event.
Annual Challenge Air "Fly Day"

November 13 (Saturday)
Gillespie Field, Administration Building
1960 Joe Crosson Drive, El Cajon, CA 92020

The Annual Challenge Air "Fly Day" event will be held at the Gillespie Field Administration Building on Saturday, November 13, 2004.

The fun-filled day will consist of an educational ground school where the children will learn about the forces of flight and learn how some of the physically challenged pilots fly with specially equipped airplanes; a twenty - thirty minute flight in the co-pilot seat soaring over local points of interest, static aircraft for the kids to tour, face painting, clowns, music, a visit from the Canine Companions for Independence, food and other fun.

The Challenge Air "Fly Day" focuses on the children’s abilities and shows them through example the many possibilities available to them in aviation. The Sky’s the Limit!

This is an amazing opportunity to inspire and motivate children and youth living with physical challenges and life-threatening illnesses. This is a free event for all participating children and families.

The Downtown Rotaract will sponsor/provide for the volunteers in the morning. To sign up or obtain more info, please contact Carl.
Toussaint Teen Center Thanksgiving

November 16
6:30 pm
Toussaint Teen Center, corner of 5th and Ash (1440 5th Avenue)

Join us for our Thanksgiving potluck meeting on November 16th, hosted at the Toussaint Teen Center. We will be conducting our meeting with 30 teens from the center, and having one huge potluck! There are so many things to be thankful for, why not share this time with our new and old friends?

The Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego has been building a close relationship with the Toussaint Teen Center, which is an organization designed to foster a sense of belonging, competence, and self-esteem to runaway or homeless teenagers in the San Diego area. The TTC is a home where teens find refuge from the streets, attend class, receive counseling and build trust.

Please plan on bringing a side dish, main dish, dessert or beverage to share! Call Andrea Espinoza, Vice President, at 619-921-9422 or e-mail Andrea to find out what food item is needed.

For more information about the Center, visit Toussaint Teen Center.
Thanksgiving Meal Delivery

November 25 (Thursday)

The Downtown Rotaract club will be volunteering to help deliver meals on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers will deliver 5 meals in groups and should plan on spending about 2 hours of their morning.

To sign up or obtain more info, please contact Carl.
District Rotaract Liaison Position Available

District 5340 is looking for a Rotaract member to act as liaison for all the clubs in the San Diego area. This person would coordinate projects between the Downtown, UCSD, SDSU, Grossmont, and Lost Boys clubs and work in conjunction with Dick Troncone and Bess Wakeman (Rotary’s District Rotaract liaisons). In addition, the new liaison would play a key role in the potential development of a North County Rotaract club.

This is an excellent opportunity for exhibiting and developing leadership skills and it would be an honor for any of our members to be considered. If you are interested in finding out more about becoming the first Rotaract liaison in our District, please e-mail Geoff before November 11.
Rotaract and Jazz 88 Present the

3rd Annual Jazz For Juvenile Diabetes

December 9, 2004

THIN (Above The Onyx Room, Gaslamp Quarter Downtown)
Featuring a night of Latin Jazz with The Caballero-Verde Quintet and DJ SK spinning Latin Jazz beats.

Volunteers Needed!
Rotaractors! Your club needs your help! :) We have an amazing Jazz event to promote to various Rotary and Rotaract Clubs around town. As a volunteer, you will visit and speak to the different groups, educating their members on the event details, cost, way to puchase tickets, opportunities for sponsorship, and raffle prize donations. Lets bring Rotarians and Rotaractors together for a fun night of boogie...what do ya say? ;)
Please e-mail Jomi to sign up! There will also be a sign up sheet at today's general meeting (Nov. 2)! Hope you can help!

We are beginning to form street teams to promote the upcoming jazz event. Teams will pass out fliers and hang posters in strategic places around downtown. There will be fun jazz shows involved so come out and help spread the word with your fellow members.
Please contact Jomi if you are interested in joining us!

Kate Certain, our Raffle Committee chair, still needs your help to collect raffle donations in retail value at or above $50. Those raffle prizes can get much-needed donations for the Juvenile Research Foundation (not to mention Rotaract!)! Please e-mail Kate Certain if you have something for the raffle!

Thank you all for your support!!!

If you have any questions, please contact Evan.

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

Rotaract History - Part 3

Perhaps the greatest impetus for the creation of the Rotaract program came from Rotary's youth service club for secondary school students, Interact clubs. Established in 1962, the Interact program enjoyed immediate success. However, since membership was only open to students in secondary schools, graduated Interactors and Rotarians were soon looking for ways to extend their relationship. Several proposals were brought before the RI Board of Directors to allow membership in Interact clubs to extend for a few years after graduation. Instead of extending the age requirements for Interact, the Board decided to study the feasibility of creating a new service club program for young adults at the university and young professional level.

The decision to adopt the Rotaract program came at a time when student protests worldwide were of growing concern to Rotarians. The Rotaract program was adopted not only as means of keeping former Interactors within the Rotary family, but as a means of channeling the energies of young adults into positive activities that could benefit their communities.
