Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held today, Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown San Diego.

Reminder: Everyone should bring in an item for the "Show and Tell" icebreaker. Remember, make it personal so we get to know a bit more about you.

There will be a Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes committee meeting after today’s general meeting.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!
San Diego Festival of Beer - Volunteer Opportunity

Sign up by Wednesday, 9/22!
September 24 (Friday)

Join us in the streets of Downtown San Diego to help pour beer for a good cause (funds raised are donated to local San Diego cancer related charities, patient treatment, and research organizations).
The San Diego Festival of Beer, on Friday, September 24, needs volunteers to help pour beer for this amazing event. Our shift will be from 8:30 pm - midnight, with beer-pouring training at 8:15 pm!

This event is located in Downtown, at Columbia and B streets, and will host over 3,000 people with over 100 microbrews supplied by more than 40 participating breweries. They also feature live music for your listening and dancing pleasure, and food vendors selling a variety of edibles.

To volunteer, e-mail Andrea Espinoza or Carl Tiu. We already have approximately 15 Rotaract volunteers, so the more the merrier!
Please e-mail by September 22!
Beach Party a Smash Hit!!

The Rotary/Rotaract Beach Party was even more fun than expected. It turned out to be a perfect day, a great stretch of beach, and Martin Blair was a wonderful host…until he crushed Rotaract’s hopes with his volleyball prowess! Rotary won the first competition for the Blair Jug with a 15-12, 7-15, 15-9 victory in beach volleyball. The volleyball games continued on until sunset and over 20 Rotaract members made it up to Carlsbad for what will definitely be one of the year’s finest social events.

Thanks again to Martin and Cindy Blair for sharing their beautiful beach house with all of us and to every Rotaract member and prospect who made the trek up to North County (special thanks to everyone who brought side dishes!).
The Blair Jug

We have decided in an effort to interact more with the Downtown Breakfast Rotary to create a trophy that can be passed back and forth between the clubs for the winners of different competitions. These may be physical contests (like the volleyball game), intellectual challenges (think trivial pursuit), or contests that involve volunteering in the community.

We’ve called the trophy "The Blair Jug" in honor of Martin Blair, who graciously hosts our meetings year in and year out.
Special thanks to Andrea Espinoza and Michelle Prescott for decorating the jug!

Check the newsletter and come to meetings to find out when we will challenge Rotary again to try to get the jug back!!
Tijuana Homebuilding in October

October 9 (Saturday)

On Saturday, October 9, in collaboration with the Downtown Breakfast Rotary and the Tijuana Rotaract Club, Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego members will be heading South of the Border on a day-long trip to help build homes for needy families in Tijuana, México. No experience necessary.

This is one of the most impactful community programs in Downtown Rotaract history. We have over 20 people already signed up to attend. You won’t want to miss it!
We are signing people up based on membership first, so if you are a prospect, please do everything you can to fill your membership requirements in September so we can give you priority status and can guarantee your place on the homebuilding crew.

To learn more about this worthwhile project, please visit México Caravan Ministries' website at http://www.mcministries.net, or feel free to contact your Club's International Chair, Denisse Roldán.
2004 Walk to Cure Diabetes

October 16 & 24

The San Diego Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) serves all of San Diego County and extends north to Orange County. The Chapter provides valuable information about juvenile diabetes to people with diabetes, their families, and the general public. It also holds numerous successful events that raise much-needed funds for diabetes research.

One of those events, the 2004 Walk to Cure Diabetes, is coming up in October. As always, there will be two occasions to join the fun and raise money for a great cause:
  • The San Diego Walk will be held Saturday, October 16, 2004 at De Anza Cove, Mission Bay.
  • The North County Walk will be held Sunday, October 24, 2004 at Cannon Park, Carlsbad.
Between the two San Diego Chapter walk sites, the 2003 Walk to Cure Diabetes raised over $510,000 for diabetes research!

For detailed information on how to join the Walk and raise money for such a great cause, visit the JDRF San Diego Chapter website: http://www.jdrf-sandiego-news.org/walk/index.html

Volunteer on Walk Day
Help register walkers, man the Walk route, set-up, teardown, etc. All those who volunteer on Walk day get credit for walking, so you can still raise funds! If you would like to volunteer your time on one or both of those days, please sign up with the JDRF directly: http://www.jdrf-sandiego-news.org/news/walk_volunteer_reg.html
The Rotaract Family Feud Championship

October 23 (Saturday)
8:00 pm
The Treo, 1277 Kettner Boulevard. Directions below.

Ah yes…remember the hit game show, Family Feud?! Where families emphatically compete against each other to match the top answers of the one hundred people surveyed? Well, it’s here.

Enjoy having “Richard Dawson” as your host and join us for our very own Rotaract Family Feud game show as we form “families” and compete to win the championship.

It’s only $5/person to play and the winning “family” will win half of the jackpot! The remainder will go to the Rotaract fund for future charitable causes.

Bring your favorite beverage to enjoy while you’re in the audience or playing the game. Bound to be filled with witty responses, good times, and loads of laughs, this will certainly be an evening to remember. Don’t miss it.

Directions & Parking:
The Treo is a gated condominium complex located at 1277 Kettner Boulevard between A Street and B Street. Go to the call box located on Kettner and scroll for "Kaiser", press call and we will buzz you in. Once you're in the gate, take the stairs up to the courtyard and look for the community room on the southeast side of the courtyard. You can park anywhere on the street for free or there are several paid parking areas surrounding the complex.

Rotary Grants for University Teachers

Rotary Grants for University Teachers provide funds to higher education faculty to travel abroad to teach at colleges and universities in developing countries. The program is intended to build international understanding and foster development while strengthening higher education in low-income countries. The program also aims to establish ties between higher education institutions, leading to the exchange of ideas and information across the globe. The subjects taught by grant recipients must be relevant to the needs of the local population and contribute to the area's socio-economic development. For 2002-03, 38 grants were awarded.
