Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held tonight, Tuesday, September 7th, 2004 (the day after Labor Day) at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown.
Please join us for a fun time and dinner/drinks afterward. We're looking forward to seeing you there!
Rotary / Rotaract Exchange Beach Party

September 11, 2004 (Saturday)
2:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Martin and Cindy Blair’s Condo, 2655 Ocean Street, Carlsbad

The San Diego Downtown Rotaract Club invites you to join in on a fun-filled Beach BBQ Party in beautiful Carlsbad.
Delicious hamburgers and hot dogs will be served fresh off the grill. SD Rotaract will provide side dishes. Please bring your choice of beverage. Don’t forget your towels and beach chairs!
Also, be sure to work on your spikes and serves because Rotaract will be challenging the Rotary Club to a volleyball match! Winning club gets bragging rights and maybe more…
Don't miss it. To RSVP, please respond to the Evite or e-mail our Social Chair Rose.

Directions: From I-5 North take the Carlsbad Village Dr exit towards Downtown. Turn Left on Carlsbad Village Dr. Turn Right on Ocean St. Look for the gate that leads to the beach!

We Need Your Help!
If you're interested in being a committee member for this event, please contact Rose. We need a "Good Grub Committee" (help BBQ, set-up food, etc) and a "Good Sport Committee" (help set-up volleyball net, coordinate other games, etc). Shouldn't take much time and gives you the opportunity to get involved and help make this a phenomenal event!
Tijuana Homebuilding in October

October 9th (Saturday)
On Saturday, October 9th, in collaboration with Breakfast Rotary and the Tijuana Rotaract Club, Rotaract Club of Downtown San Diego members will be heading South of the Border on a day-long trip to help build homes for needy families in Tijuana, México. No experience necessary.
One of the most impactful community programs in Downtown Rotaract history. You won’t want to miss it! We will be signing people up based on membership first so if you are a prospect, please do everything you can to fill your membership requirements in early September so we can give you priority status and you can guarantee your place on the homebuilding crew.
More details at our September 7 meeting…
To learn more about this worthwhile project, please visit México Caravan Ministries' website at http://www.mcministries.net, or feel free to contact your Club's International Chair, Denisse Roldán.
North County Rotaract in the Planning Stages

Anyone who lives or works in North County and has suggestions for cities, places to host, potential founding members, etc please contact Geoff. We will discuss this topic at our meeting on September 7.

Joining Committees

The Rancho Jireh picnic was a success largely due to the efforts made by the core event committee. Committee membership is not only a great avenue for practicing and developing leadership skills, it is also a prominent part of Rotary membership. We hope to emulate their spirit and organization by continuing to form committees for our big events.
If you are a member or a prospect and you want to take ownership and responsibility to help make an event happen, please talk to Geoff or Andrea. We have headlining events coming up in October (TJ Homebuilding…see Denisse) and December (Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes…see Evan) and we will look forward to working with you on a committee!
Community Service Events

Rancho Jireh Picnic - Recap

A good time was had by all!! Carl did a great job organizing the picnic and Chris Jaccard was instrumental in providing experience and advice on what worked and didn’t work at last year’s picnic. Bridget Johnson and new member, Amy Klockgether, were instrumental in making this event a success! They were everywhere we needed them all the time, buying prizes and food, creating gold medals, showing up early and leaving late. Thanks to all members and prospects who gave their time and energy to make the day special.
The children, families, and staff at Rancho Jireh were greatly appreciative and they all signed a card for us to express their gratitude. Geoff will bring the card to our next meeting (Sept. 7) so everyone can read their well wishes.

Social Events

Designated Driver Program

We are proud to announce that we will use designated driver teams of 2 for all SD Rotaract Social events this year. As socially responsible role models in the community, we think it is important to let everyone know that we are making sure that everyone gets home safely from our fun! Driving teams will not drink at the parties and will drive members home in their cars and follow behind in another car so the team can return to the event. This program is patterned after the Designated Driver Association of San Diego (www.ddasd.org) which we encourage you to use if you are in need on a Friday/Saturday night in the Gaslamp or PB.

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

Service Project Development
Service defines Rotary's character and is the basis for its appeal and visibility in the community. Above all other principles, "Service Above Self" is the credo that guides Rotary. Each Rotaract club is required to complete at least two major service projects annually, one to serve the community and the other to promote international understanding.
