Next Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 17th, 2004, at 6:30 pm at Kansas City BBQ, 610 W. Market Street, Downtown.

Please note: Instead of having our regular general meeting that evening, we will go on a bus tour with the Centre City Development Corporation. We will still meet at KC BBQ. Check out all the details below.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!
CCDC Bus Tour in Lieu of Next Meeting

August 17th (Tuesday)
6:30 pm @ KC BBQ

In lieu of our regular meeting on Aug 17th, we will be taking a bus tour led by the Centre City Development Corporation. CCDC staffs & implements retail, residential, office, hotel, cultural and educational projects and public improvement projects in San Diego.
Visit www.ccdc.com for more info about the organization and join us on the bus tour to get a first-hand glimpse of the latest & greatest around our city!

We will be meeting at our regular spot, Kansas City Barbeque @ 6:30pm sharp. The bus will be picking us up at 6:45pm, and the tour is to last one hour. We would love for as many people as possible to attend, but there is a limited number of seats. So please mark your calendars and if you haven't received the E-vite, please email Bridget Johnson with your RSVP as soon as possible. (* It is important that if you say you will attend, you do show up for the tour - and on time. Thanks!)

Also, following the tour, some of us may head over to get dinner. This is an open invitation - if you can't stay for dinner, that's okay. But, the more the merrier!
If you have questions, you may call Andrea (619-921-9422) or Bridget (619-846-1992.)
Annual Rancho Jireh Picnic

August 22 (Sunday)
The annual Rancho Jireh picnic is set for Sunday, August 22. It will be held at Crown Point South.
Rancho Jireh Foster Homes is a non-profit Christian ministry serving the needs of abused and neglected children. The picnic will be a day of BBQ, games, and a whole lot of fun for new families and Rotaract.
We still need volunteers to help with the coordination! Please e-mail Carl if you would like to sign up or call him at 201-841-5042.
Designated Driver Program

We are proud to announce that we will use designated driver teams of 2 for all SD Rotaract Social events this year. As socially responsible role models in the community, we think it is important to let everyone know that we are making sure that everyone gets home safely from our fun! Driving teams will not drink at the parties and will drive members home in their cars and follow behind in another car so the team can return to the event. This program is patterned after the Designated Driver Association of San Diego (www.ddasd.org) which we encourage you to use if you are in need on a Friday/Saturday night in the Gaslamp or PB.
Fundraising: 2004 Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes

Meetings began this week between Rotaract and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of San Diego. This year’s amazing event will take place on either the first or 2nd week of December and both talent and venue are being researched now. Volunteers are needed to help gather raffle/auction prizes and for the publicity team. Contact Evan Papel if you would like to lend your heart, mind, and energy to this year’s 3rd annual crucial fundraising event.

Road to Athens: Olympic T-shirts for sale!

Support our San Diego friend, Tim Seaman, as he represents the USA in Athens next week. We are selling "Road to Athens" official Tim Seaman fan club T-shirts to help Tim raise funds to pay for training and living expenses. He is one of a rare few Olympians who must work while training because he is married and not allowed to live at the Olympic Training Center.
Tim’s race is the 20k racewalk and it begins at 11 pm Pacific time on Thursday, August 19 (local time will be 9 am on Friday in Greece).
Shirts are M, L, and XL and are $15 each. Please e-mail Geoff if you would like to purchase a shirt.
Community Service Events

Senior Center

2nd Saturday of each month
Volunteers (2-3) are needed the 2nd Saturday of each month from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm to help serve lunch at the Senior Center Downtown.
Please contact Carl for details and availability.
International Events

If you are planning a trip outside the US and want to give a report upon your return, please contact Denisse Roldan, our International Chair, before and/or after your trip.
We are also happy to help make contact with Rotaract clubs that may be in your destination city so let us know if we can help locate contacts for you. This is a great way to get some local guidance and make international friends!
Membership Drive

We are continuing our efforts to credit all new members for meeting their initiation requirements. If you have attended 3 meetings, 1 social event, 1 community service event, and 1 Downtown San Diego Breakfast Rotary Club meeting, please e-mail Andrea or talk to her at our next meeting to let her know where you stand. And please feel free to let us know if you are closing in on becoming a member, too!

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

What support do Rotaract clubs receive from Rotary International?

Once the Rotaract club is chartered, it is entered into Rotary International's member database. Then, the Rotaract club and its sponsoring Rotary club will begin receiving Rotaract updates, the Worldwide Rotaract Directory and Rotaract News. Rotary International also provides a number of useful online resources. The highlight of the Rotaract year is the annual Rotaract Preconvention Meeting, which is held prior to the RI Convention. RI staff, in conjunction with the RI Rotaract Committee, plans an exciting program, giving Rotaractors and Rotarians from around the world the opportunity to join together, share ideas and discuss issues.
