"What's Happening in San Diego"

Featured by the CCDC
August 17th (Tuesday)
6:30 pm @ KC BBQ
Have you ever wondered about what's new and what is coming up for Downtown San Diego?
Sheila Hardin of the Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) will be leading our Rotaract group on a San Diego bus tour, highlighting the development of retail, residential, office, hotel, cultural and education projects and improvements of the Downtown area.
This bus tour will replace our 2nd meeting of the month and we encourage everyone to put it on your calendars now. This is something you will not want to miss!
We will still be meeting at KC BBQ at 6:30pm, and heading to meet Sheila shortly thereafter. There are 30 available spaces for the bus tour, so please come to this week's meeting to sign up. If you are not at the meeting, please e-mail Andrea or call at 619.921.9422 to save a spot!
Other information about the CCDC may be found on the website: http://www.ccdc.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/resources.info
We'll talk more about the tour at this week's meeting. But, be sure to mark your calendars in advance for the 8/17/04 tour. Any members, prospects or guests to our meeting that night are welcome to join. You won't want to miss it!
Designated Driver Program

We are planning to adopt a program for safe rides home for any members in need at SD Rotaract Social Events. We will be discussing options at tonight’s meeting. It is important for us to remember that while we love to have a good time, we are a socially responsible club and we think it’s important to guarantee the safety of our members and friends.
Fundraising: 2004 Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes

Meetings begin next week between Rotaract and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of San Diego to plan the 2004 Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes event to take place this Fall/Winter. The date will be finalized and corporate sponsors will be sought this month.
If you would like to help with this amazing 3rd annual event, please contact Evan Papel.
Community Service Events

Annual Rancho Jireh Picnic

August 22 (Sunday)
The annual Rancho Jireh picnic is set for Sunday, August 22. It will be held at Crown Point South.
Rancho Jireh Foster Homes is a non-profit Christian ministry serving the needs of abused and neglected children. The picnic will be a day of BBQ, games, and a whole lot of fun for new families and Rotaract.
We still need volunteers to help with the coordination, so contact Carl at 201-841-5042 or e-mail at ctiu2@yahoo.com.

Senior Center

2nd Saturday of each month
Volunteers (2-3) are needed the 2nd Saturday of each month from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm to help serve lunch at the Senior Center Downtown.
Please contact Carl for details and availability.
International Events

Geoff met with the Stockholm Rotaract on his Europe trip and is planning to give a report on their club as well as on the countries he visited. This will be the first of a new initiative to educate our members on other countries.
If you are planning a trip outside the US and want to give a report upon your return, please contact Denisse Roldan, our International Chair, before and/or after your trip.
We are also happy to help make contact with Rotaract clubs that may be in your destination city so let us know if we can help locate contacts for you. This is a great way to get some local guidance and make international friends!

Rotaract & Rotary Trivia

Can two Rotary clubs sponsor one Rotaract club?

Yes, a Rotaract club can be organized and sponsored jointly by more than one Rotary club under the following conditions:
  • The district governor approves the joint sponsorship in writing;
  • The circumstances must be such that the organization of separate Rotaract clubs, each sponsored by a single Rotary club, would create an artificial division of what is essentially a single body of young adults in the community or university;
  • A joint Rotaract committee is formed with members of each sponsoring Rotary club; and
  • Each member of the Rotaract club agrees to adhere to the constitution and bylaws of the club.
